Commander Lawrence’s Plan For New Bethlehem (And Nick’s Role In It) Explained By Bradley Whitford

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episodes 1-3!The Handmaid’s Tale star Bradley Whitford has explained Commander Lawrence’s plan for New Bethlehem and Nick’s role in its future. The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 has only just begun, with Lawrence (Whitford) continuing to explore his plans for New Bethlehem’s future and the promise it holds. In the meantime, Nick (Max Minghella) has been having his allegiances tested, something that will likely continue to influence him as the tides shift. With the story slowly shifting toward an ending, however, it seems like the story of New Bethlehem will be reaching its climactic point soon.

Speaking with ScreenRant, Whitford explained how Commander Lawrence’s plan for New Bethlehem will involve Nick in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6. He discussed how the founding of the location is built on “economic power, hopeful that he can turn it into a place independent of Gilead’s rule. However, the actor also laid out the challenges that will be in his way, and what they mean for the final episodes. Check out what Whitford had to say below:

I think what he’s betting on is economic power, and I worry about this in real life. I worry that we’re never going to deal with climate change until Florida and California are uninsurable. Economic imperatives power moral decisions, unfortunately. But I think that’s the angle.

I think he’s hopeful, and I think the early signs are good that he can turn this into kind of a Hong Kong, and make the North Korea situation a little more of a China situation. He may be naive, but we’ll see. Fingers crossed.

What Whitford’s Statement Means For New Bethlehem In The Handmaid’s Tale

Season 6 Could Determine The Fate Of His Goals

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 ended with Nick clearly unable to let go of June, helping the American government just for a chance to see her. While they were reunited during the start of season 6, it’s unclear what his connection to Lawrence really means as New Bethlehem takes shape. Even though the location is supposed to be a less totalitarian version of Gilead, it raises questions as to whether the ideals that shaped the original nation can be embraced somewhere that provides relatively more freedom.

The Handmaid’s Tale: What Happens To June In The Book

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale TV series has continued the story of June, aka Offred, beyond Margaret Atwood’s novel, but what becomes of her in the book?

As for how Lawrence will attain his goals, he’s always been willing to side with anyone who he feels aligns with his visions, including June (Elisabeth Moss). But he’s also an independent thinker, something that makes him abrasive toward some other characters in The Handmaid’s Tale when he’s trying to get what he desires. While Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) could be a key figure given her shift in allegiances, the truth is he may need to think outside the box, recruiting other major characters to his cause before he can truly make his vision a reality.

Because of how much Lawrence has evolved over the course of the series, his plans for New Bethlehem need him to remain confident in his breakaway from Gilead. To do this, he’ll need to ensure the allies he does have are trustworthy, and that he doesn’t end up getting himself killed trying to go against the nation he helped to form. With seven episodes left, The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 has plenty of time to explore his new creation, while emphasizing what it means for the future of his country.

New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 arrive Tuesdays on Hulu.
