Doctor Odyssey Season 2 Gets Hopeful Response From Joshua Jackson As ABC Medical Show Remains On A Bubble

Joshua Jackson, who plays Dr. Max Bankman in Doctor Odyssey, offers an update on season 2 and talks about the “purgatory” conspiracy around the series. Set on a luxurious cruise ship, the Ryan Murphy show follows the newly appointed doctor and the staff as they navigate various crises miles from the shore. Since the show’s release, there have been numerous theories about Max and the entire ship being stuck in purgatory.

In an interview with Vulture, Jackson responds to the popular theory while sharing his thoughts on season 2. The actor shared that he has taken a “medium-deep dive” into the conspiracy himself and is totally on board “if it’s true.” While the show’s co-creator has the ultimate say in where the story goes, Jackson teased that Murphy “likes the idea” and that writers of the series are active on the message boards. Check out his comments below:

I guess I would say I’m moderately paying attention, and I’m really hopeful the reception is strong enough for them to give us a second season. I try as best as I can, just for my own psychological well-being, to not dive in too deep. But I definitely did a medium-deep dive on the whole “This is purgatory” conspiracy because I think that’s so funny, and, if it’s true, is awesome. I am totally for it, 1,000 percent.

The only person on earth who gets to make that decision will be Ryan, but he likes the idea. For sure, our writers are also in those message boards and are tweaking people along the way, but maybe they’re just laying the groundwork. I really don’t know, but I will find out a couple of weeks before everybody else if it does go that way. I’m legitimately all for it. I think it would be hysterical because then you could do crazy things. Are we in Dante’s Inferno? Do we go through the seven circles? Are we in purgatory one season, then it’s hell, then we’re in heaven?

What This Means For Doctor Odyssey Season 2

Doctor Odyssey’s Fate Is Still In The Air

The series will wrap its first season with a final episode on May 15. Recent reports have speculated that the cruise ship medical drama might be ending with the upcoming season 1 finale due to declining reception and relatively high costs for production. Jackson’s comments reveal that they are working behind the scenes to get the series renewed, which means that there’s a high chance that the season 1 finale might serve as the series’ conclusion.

Ranking Doctor Odyssey’s Best Cruise Weeks Based On Ridiculousness

Doctor Odyssey has been known for featuring exciting and unique weekly themes for each cruise but some are more ridiculous than others.

Doctor Odyssey‘s fate is currently in limbo as the series waits for the official announcement. On the other hand, the popular theory that has been circling online about the show being a metaphor for death may have originated from the show’s writers, who are “tweaking people along the way.” Jackson’s comments cast further uncertainty about the popular theory, although this could change if the series gets renewed for another season.

Our Take On The Purgatory Theory And Doctor Odyssey’s Renewal

It’s A Fascinating Idea

Max in an episode of Doctor Odyssey, in a suit

The purgatory conspiracy has certainly served to make the cruise ship medical drama more appealing, and it’s not without merits. The series has thrown a lot of curveballs at Max that it almost seems a little too personal. With the 9-1-1 crossover that features Athena Grant (Angela Bassett), Avery’s pregnancy, and many unanswered questions in Doctor Odyssey, it makes sense that many would start to wonder whether Max is trapped in a coma.

In that case, The Odyssey would represent the space between life and death as Max’s fate is in the air. The purgatory theory certainly offers an interesting take on the events that went down in Doctor Odyssey season 1 and makes the renewal of the series sound very appealing. With its fate on the bubble, there’s still hope of the show becoming a multi-season series.
