One of Dope Thief‘s stars gives an optimistic take on the prospect of season 2. Produced by Ridley Scott, the Apple TV+ series is a crime drama that follows a duo of friends who pretend to be DEA agents in order to rob a house, but end up inadvertently uncovering the secrets of a huge narcotics operation. Dope Thief features a leading cast including Brian Tyree Henry, Wagner Moura, Marin Ireland, Kieu Chinh, Ving Rhames, Nesta Cooper, Amir Arison, and Kate Mulgrew. The series began on March 14 and released its final episode on April 25.
Speaking with Express UK, Chinh talks about the possibility of Dope Thief season 2. She praises the show, calling it a “thrilling watch” and saying that she would “love to see a second season.” She also discusses how different this role was from other roles she had in the past, and appreciated that she “finally [got] to play Dustin’s on-screen mother!” This is in reference to Dustin Nguyen, one of the Dope Thief actors, whose father played Chinh’s on-screen husband in a movie years ago. Check out the full quote from Chinh below:
I would love to see a second season of Dope Thief! As you can see, there’s so many more opportunities to follow the characters.
Every episode you’re left wanting to know what’s going to happen next, is someone getting caught? Is someone going to find them? Who else is involved? The performances of the cast is great and exciting.
[Creator Peter Craig] told me about what this was and I liked it because it was something different than other roles I’ve had before. Being able to work with an incredible cast, crew, and production has been an honor. Now I finally get to play Dustin’s on-screen mother!
What This Means For Dope Thief
Dope Thief Got Some Good Reviews
For Chinh, Dope Thief was a big opportunity. The 87-year-old actor spent the early days of her career playing roles in mostly Vietnamese films. She is also known for her role in The Joy Luck Club, and she was recently in the psychological horror film Control Freak. Dope Thief allowed Chinh the opportunity to take on a different genre than she was accustomed to, playing in a crime drama. Chinh references this in her quote, and clearly appreciated the opportunity to stand out from her typical role.
In terms of her comments on Dope Thief‘s season 2 viability, it is certainly possible for this series to get renewed. Dope Thief has gotten strong reviews overall, scoring an 86% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% from audiences. The show has seen some streaming success throughout its run, which could propel it into a renewal. Reelgood data from the week of March 13 to 19 showed that the series was the no. 8 most-streamed show in the United States, following its debut. If they choose a good storyline, Dope Thief season 2 could work well.
Our Take On The Dope Thief Season 2 Renewal Chances
It Needs To Sustain Strong Reception
Whether Dope Thief gets renewed will ultimately come down to how well the show has sustained its initial success. There are some indications that the series may have taken a backslide. In his review of the Dope Thief finale, ScreenRant‘s Greg MacArthur gave the episode a 5 out of 10 star review, saying the “crime series lacked direction and identity.” If audiences agree with MacArthur, this could be a bad sign for the chances of the show getting renewed for more episodes, but only time will tell.
