Everyone Was In Absolute Shock

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 4, “12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis.”

Sophie Nélisse, who plays young Shauna on Yellowjackets, breaks down the shocking death of Lottie. The loss of adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) marks another devastating funeral to attend for the present-day survivors, continuing the hit Showtime thriller series’ tradition of shocking deaths. As Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), Misty (Christina Ricci), Taissa (Tawny Cypress), and Van (Lauren Ambrose) struggle to move on from Natalie’s (Juliette Lewis) tragic end, Lottie’s unexpected death serves as a grim warning that the wilderness may not be finished with them yet.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Nélisse opened up about the cast’s reaction to learning about Lottie’s fate, revealing that everyone was completely blindsided by her death. With only four of the seven survivors of the 1996 plane crash still alive, the mystery surrounding Lottie is already proving to be one of the biggest turning points in Yellowjackets season 3. Check out Nélisse’s comments below:

We were like, “There’s no way! We’ve just lost Natalie, we can’t lose someone else!” That’s too much.

It’s hard because I always say that whenever we kill characters off, it’s a testament to how good of an actor they are. You don’t kill a character that no one cares about, you kill the characters that people care about because that’s what makes the show so good, and what makes it so hard to see them go.

I like to believe that it’s not true, but I don’t know. I mean, it’s Yellowjackets. We have free rein on what we can do, what we can fake, and how we’ll want to do the twists and turns. But we have this group thread, and we text each other whenever an episode [script] is released, and we were like, “No way!” Everyone was in absolute shock and devastated.

Also, I’m very close to Simone [Kessell] and Melanie [Lynskey]. I love them both so much. And to me the idea of not having Simone is impossible.

What Lottie’s Death Means For Yellowjackets’ Future

Lottie’s Fate May Be The Key

Lottie’s death in Yellowjackets will have Shauna, Misty, Taissa, and Van scrambling for answers. In the latest episode, Misty discovers a crime scene photo of Lottie in an online detective forum where she’s seen lying in a candle-lit tunnel eerily similar to the one a young Lottie envisioned in the Ontario wilderness as a teenager. Citizen detective Misty will likely take the lead in unraveling the mystery, but Lottie’s death may also serve as an unexpected catalyst for reuniting the remaining four survivors.

Yellowjackets Makes Lottie’s Most Mysterious Visions From Season 1 Extremely Tragic

Visions that Lottie Matthews had in Yellowjackets season 1 are now more tragic due to what happens to her in the present-day timeline.

Whether her death was a murder, a suicide, or some other “twists and turns,” one thing is certain: Yellowjackets isn’t done making its characters confront their pasts. Misty, in particular, wastes no time in her investigation, with the Yellowjackets season 3, episode 5 trailer already showing her making significant progress in finding the mysterious tunnel where Lottie’s body was discovered. As the group delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding Lottie’s sudden death, they may find the answers to teen Lottie’s visions from seasons 1 and 2.

Our Take On Lottie’s Death

No One Is Safe In Yellowjackets

Adult Lottie Matthews looking shocked in Yellowjackets season 3

Lottie’s death is yet another reminder that Yellowjackets refuses to play it safe. Natalie’s shocking sacrifice in the season 2 finale already broke expectations about which characters were untouchable, and now Lottie’s unexpected demise has reinforced that anyone can die. With only Shauna, Misty, Taissa, and Van left among the adult survivors, Yellowjackets season 3 is likely to lead to a confrontation at the place they were stranded long ago. If Lottie’s death is any indication, the wilderness isn’t finished with them yet.
