HBO Max Will Return After Warner Bros. Reverses Course On Branding

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that its streaming service Max will be rebranded as “HBO Max” during the summer of 2025. Of course, this is the second big rebrand the platform has faced in the last couple of years. HBO Max was the original, but WBD decided to chop the “HBO” when it merged content over from Discovery+ back in 2023. Only two short years later, the HBO brand will again be fixed to Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform.

The HBO Max rebranding was announced at the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation in New York on May 14, 2025. WBD’s president and CEO, David Zaslav, said, “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media,” going on to state that this brand will allow Warner Bros. Discovery to “accelerate [the] growth” seen on the streaming service in recent years. JB Perrette and Casey Bloys, the CEOs of Streaming and HBO/Max Content, respectively, added further details on the goals of this rebrand. See their full quotes below:

Perrette: “We will continue to focus on what makes us unique – not everything for everyone in a household, but something distinct and great for adults and families. It’s really not subjective, not even controversial – our programming just hits different.”

Bloys: “With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.”

What HBO Max’s Return Means For The Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming Service

How Max’s Content May Change

Warner Bros. Discovery initially axed the “HBO” from HBO Max as part of the decision to merge Discovery+ with the streaming service. The platform included a wider variety of content, so Max was a more fitting title. However, the statements from Zaslav, Perrette, and Bloys emphasize that the reversal of this previous 2023 rebrand results from the platform’s continued growth and a preference for HBO’s content. Other streaming services aim to provide, as Perrette said, enough of a mix that there is something for everyone in the household. HBO, on the other hand, has prioritized niche uniqueness.

It appears that the upcoming rebranding will mean that the streaming service is refocusing on HBO’s specific brand of content while leaning into other projects that boast a similar uniqueness.

The current “Max” platform already prioritizes HBO projects, even without saying so in the name. With the big shift back to “HBO Max,” the preferential content is emphasized by the title. The Warner Bros. Discovery website states that the company will be “de-prioritizing other genres that drive less engagement and acquisition.” Overall, it appears that the upcoming rebranding will mean that the streaming service is refocusing on HBO’s specific brand of content while leaning into other projects that boast a similar uniqueness.

Our Take On HBO Max’s Return

It’s Good To See HBO & Max Back Together

Warner Bros. Discovery rebranding Max back to HBO Max is a bit comical, considering the change was only made a couple of years ago. The company is in on the joke, at least, since the website features a Friends meme of Ross Geller’s classic line, “We were on a break!” with Ross labeled as Max and Rachel as HBO. I get the feeling that WBD knows that this backtracking looks a little strange, but the comments from the various CEO’s successfully present the return of HBO Max in a positive light. It’s not a desperate attempt to regain a lost audience, but a tactical reassurance that the content we love isn’t going anywhere.
