High Potential guest star Jocko Sims opens up about whether his character, Ronnie Oliver, will return. Ronnie was first introduced in the penultimate episode of High Potential and appears in the finale. Ronnie is the former partner of Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), though they part on bad terms. Oliver has since moved on to working with the FBI and his reunion with Karadec is fraught. They reconcile enough that Ronnie ultimately helps Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and Karadec with their cases.
In an interview with Screen Rant‘s Rachel Foertsch, to promote his new NBC crime drama series Grosse Pointe Garden Society, Sims was asked about whether he could reprise his role as Ronnie for the already-renewed High Potential season 2. The actor, known for his roles in New Amsterdamand the acclaimed How to Die Alone, sounded hopeful that Ronnie could reappear. But because the character works for the FBI and the LAPD, he cautioned that the story had to make sense. Read the quote below:
A hundred percent. I’m going to tell you now, on that show, I’ve talked to the showrunner, we’re having conversations, we’re trying to figure that out. He’s not in the LAPD, he’s in the FBI, and it’s got to all make sense. But that’s another great show and great cast. Todd Harthan is a great showrunner. So we’ll see.
What Jocko Sims’ Character Means For High Potential
He Adds To Karadec
Karadec and Oliver were once close. But more or less, as Ronnie admits to himself, he left his partner at the worst possible time. After a case went south, Ronnie took a job at the FBI and abandoned Karadec to deal with the fallout and take the blame. Karadec is still angry with Ronnie when he reappears, but the tension eventually subsides. Ronnie even helps Karadec look for Roman, Morgan’s missing ex.

A lot of High Potential, from creator Drew Goddard and showrunner Todd Harthan, revolves around Morgan. But the introduction of Morgan offers a window into what Karadec was like before he met her, teasing out hopes and aspirations that are on tap to be explored in High Potential season 2. Bringing back Oliver may be a key part of that.
Our Take On Oliver Returning For High Potential Season 2
There Should Be More Recurring Characters
Slowly but surely, over the course of the series and into the High Potential season 1 finale, the ABC breakout hit steadily added to its potential for recurring characters. Averaging over 10 million viewers per episodes, the crime drama should feel comfortable to bring more recurring faces. There is potential with relatives, villains, and even former friends like Ronnie Oliver. It’s a good approach, too, if executives ever want to experiment with a spinoff of the successful series. The next iteration could take place, for example, in and around the FBI. But it all starts with growing the cast.
