The article contains major spoilers for The Night Agent season 2 finale “Divergence.”After The Night Agent season 2’s stunning finale, two new villains are poised to dominate the show going forward. Throughout season 2, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) desperately attempts to balance his relationship with Rose (Luciane Buchanan) and his work as a Night Agent. Unfortunately, Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum) had other plans for the agent. The Night Agent season 2 finale’s flashback scene revealed that Monroe has been pulling the strings behind President Hagan’s campaign, making him the new big bad.
Series creator Shawn Ryan opened up about the competing antagonists in an interview with Tudum by Netflix. While Monroe’s scheme is falling into place, Hagan still has his own plans. While Ryan stated, “I think one thing we’ll learn in Season 3 is that I don’t think Hagan believes he’s a puppet,” the two will still inevitably have overlapping plans for the country. Check out his quote below:
One of the things that Season 3 will question is whether Monroe is the big bad? Is Hagan the big bad? Are the two of them as a combo the big bad? But certainly Monroe is the loose thread of Season 2. That’s going to have to be dealt with in some way in Season 3.
What Monroe’s Role Means For Night Agent Season 3
Monroe & Hagan Will Be Wrestling For Power
With Peter now following in his father’s footsteps, he is preparing to serve as a double agent in The Night Agent season 3. He will be working under Monroe, supposedly through the threat of blackmail. In reality, he remains as loyal as ever to the organization that his father once betrayed. As Monroe and Hagan spar over their political influence, Peter will have a front-row seat for every spat. That is the exact reason that Amanda Warren’s Catherine wanted to see Peter take Monroe’s deal. They will now have unprecedented insight into the intelligence broker’s capabilities and plans.

The Night Agent season 2 has a crucial subplot involving French documents. Here’s what they are and how they impact the narrative for Night Action.
Even with Peter being in a position to save the country from Monroe’s influence, he may not have much control over Hagan. As the President of the United States, Hagan will have immense power and control, which could be why he no longer views himself as Monroe’s puppet. Still, Monroe has proven to be intelligent enough to adapt to any situation and certainly has blackmail over Hagan. Peter will also face blackmail. Basso reflected that Peter’s role will be complicated, as “he’s just going to be pulled in different directions and hopefully not torn in half.”
Our Take On Monroe’s Role In Season 3
Monroe Is Exactly What This Show Needed
Any clandestine thriller always needs to feature an overarching threat. While The Night Agent season 2 featured Peter beginning his journey as a full-time agent for Night Action, this new role allows him to grow into an even more specialized agent. He will work directly with a brilliant schemer, who could help him grow his own talents as an intelligence operator. Monroe represents a homegrown threat against the entire country. Enormous stakes made the show great, and he presented an opportunity to escalate the situation even further. Besides, it will be fun to see just how Monroe operates.
