Hugh Laurie To Play Crime Syndicate Head In New Thriller Series Alongside Game Of Thrones & Westworld Stars

Hugh Laurie will play the head of a crime syndicate in a new thriller series alongside Game of Thrones and Westworld stars. The English actor is best known for his portrayal of the eponymous Dr. Gregory House on House (2004-2012), Fox’s medical drama, for which he received six Emmy nominations. Since then, he’s starred in several more TV shows, playing the main antagonist in the miniseries The Night Manager and guest starring in the HBO sitcom Veep, receiving two more Emmy nominations.

Now, the eight-time Emmy-nominated actor has found a new series. According to Deadline, Hugh Laurie will headline the new Apple TV+ series The Wanted Man alongside Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) and Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones). The series, described as a thriller drama, hails from George Kay, the co-creator of the Apple TV+ series Hijack, and also stars Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Gina McKee, Hazel Doupe, and Elliott Heffernan. Laurie will play Felix Carmichael, the head of a British crime syndicate, in the series, for which the synopsis reads as follows:

The Wanted Man charts the rise and fall of Felix Carmichael, the elusive and powerful head of notorious British crime syndicate The Capital. Untouchable for twenty years, Carmichael is finally apprehended, but while he’s held in the infamous Staplehurst prison, it becomes clear that he’s been betrayed by one of his own. As the traitor moves to dismantle the empire he has built, Carmichael must risk everything in a daring escape. Willing to stop at nothing to take his revenge, if he succeeds, he’ll be a wanted man once more.

Newton is reportedly playing a single mother with Heffernan, star of the Apple TV+ movie Blitz, cast as her son. McKee is expected to play Felix’s wife, while Dillane is believed to be taking on the role of his older brother.

What This Means For The Wanted Man

Has Hugh Laurie Found His Next Great Role?

Hugh Laurie remains one of television’s biggest stars due to his eight-season stint on House. Since then, he’s remained a reliable presence on television, starring in The Night Manager and Veep, earning acclaim for both. Now, playing the head of a crime syndicate trying to escape from prison, The Wanted Man offers Laurie a chance at his next great role. However, at only eight episodes, it will be a more limited role similar to the miniseries The Night Manager or his guest role on Veep, as opposed to his eight-season run on House.

From comedies including Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest to dramas including Severance, there are many great TV shows available to binge-watch on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ shows are typically star-studded, and The Wanted Man will continue this trend with Laurie in the lead role. Its supporting cast is also notable, with Westworld‘s Thandiwe Newton co-starring, who won an Emmy Award for her performance in the HBO sci-fi series as Maeve Millay, an android who becomes self-aware. Stephen Dillane should also be widely recognizable for his role as Stannis Baratheon in Game of Thrones, though he received an Emmy nomination years earlier for playing Thomas Jefferson in the HBO miniseries John Adams.

Our Take On Hugh Laurie Starring In The Wanted Man

He’s At His Best When Playing Complicated Characters

Hugh Laurie is at his best when playing complicated characters. Most famously in House, as his titular character was a brilliant but cynical and misanthropic medical genius who, despite his addiction to painkillers, effectively leads a team of diagnosticians. His character in The Night Manager was an arms dealer who appears charming and frequently participates in charity work, but is considered “the worst man in the world” because of his cold-blooded, amoral, and psychopathic behavior. The Wanted Man should offer a very similar role for Hugh Laurie.
