The Pitt star Shawn Hatosy has revealed how one cut scene would have drastically changed a character relationship between his Dr. Abbot and someone else. Abbot first appears in episode 1, just as Robby (Noah Wyle) is arriving on his shift. After the changeover happens, he’s not seen again until the PittFest victims are brought in, giving him more development as he interacts with The Pitt‘s characters. His most important moments happen with Robby, though, offering only a few glimpses at his relationships with his other co-workers at the hospital.
Speaking with Variety, Hatosy revealed that Abbot was supposed to have a short scene in The Pitt episode 1 where he praised Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) in a way that could be interpreted to imply he has a romantic interest in her. The actor explained how Abbot was supposed to compliment Mohan’s intelligence, and that it would read like he was flirtatious about it. However, the actor did acknowledge the power difference between the pair and what that would mean for such a relationship. Check out what Hatosy had to say below:
There’s one line in the first episode that got cut, where somebody makes a comment that she’s slow, and I say, ‘She’s the smartest person here.’ And just from that, I feel like it was definitely, in my opinion, heading in a direction…. I think he likes her, if I’m being honest, only because of what I read. He has admiration for her brain, there’s something there. When you’re working closely with somebody that can evolve. So I think there’s a flirtation. I don’t want to sound creepy when I say it because he’s in the power position.
What Abbot’s Crush On Mohan Would Have Meant For The Pitt
A Connection That Probably Can’t Happen
Mohan also first appeared in the medical drama’s series premiere, with her main character trait being that she works with patients in a more slow, deliberate manner than other doctors. However, despite getting some criticism from others for her approach, she ends up saving many lives and helping a multitude of memorable patients, even leading to some of The Pitt‘s most emotional moments. She utilizes what others see as a disadvantage and creates a deeper connection to her patients because of it.

I See You, The Pitt’s Mel & Langdon Shippers, And I Need You To Stop
There’s a small but fervent group of fans who ship Mel and Langdon in The Pitt instead of appreciating the series for what it is – and what it isn’t..
Abbot doesn’t interact much with Mohan directly in the show, even after he’s called in to help save the lives of PittFest shooting victims. This means it’s unclear if the scene of him praising her was cut because the subplot won’t happen, or if those feelings could crop up in the series proper during The Pitt season 2. Because it’s unknown which of the series’ guest stars, like Hatos, will be coming back, it remains unclear if the storyline could have a true chance to appear in the forthcoming episodes next year.
The Pitt has been renewed for season 2, which is set to premiere on Max in January 2026.
