Invincible‘s Robert Kirkman shares an update on the live-action movie. Kirkman is the writer and creator of the original comic series, which first introduced readers to the world of Mark Grayson (aka Invincible), his dad Nolan (aka Omni-Man), and the intergalactic tales between Earth-dwellers and the Viltrumites. Since the 144-issue comic series concluded in 2018, Prime Video has developed an adult animated version of Invincible. It released its first season in 2021, and has now had three completed seasons, the most recent of which wrapped up last week. Invincible‘s voice cast includes Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, and Sandra Oh.
Speaking with Comicbook, Kirkman provides an update on the Invincible live-action movie. The comic book creator seemed optimistic about the film, noting he “would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.” He did say, however, “that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie.” He could not provide much more of a specific update than that. What This Means For The Invincible Movie
The Film Was First Announced In 2017
Kirkman’s update comes eight years after the Invincible live-action movie was first confirmed in 2017. This original announcement came before the February 2018 conclusion of the original story, and before the June 2018 confirmation that Amazon had given the animated show a series order for eight episodes. While development on the film has been much slower than development on the TV show, which is already in progress, the film was confirmed to be in development as recently as 2021. Invincible producer and voice actor Seth Rogen later confirmed that the animated series was influencing the live-action series.
Kirkman’s most recent statement provides some vagueness as to how that influence operates. On the one hand, the television show could make things “vastly easier” because it already establishes the main characters, and thus can build audience anticipation for the movie. One reason it might make it “very difficult,” however, is because the movie might not want to re-tread storylines that are already well-developed in the series. Or, it might want to wait until the Prime Video series wraps up before releasing. So, Kirkman’s comments suggest the Invincible movie is still happening, but the timeline is unclear.
