It Would Be Most Heartbreaking

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 2.

Squid Game star Lee Seo-hwan suggests a dark theory about what may happen to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) in season 3. Seo-hwan plays Gi-hun’s friend, Park Jung-bae, who is a prominent character in season 2. He and Gi-hun were friends long before the games and their friendship carries over into the three competitions that they survive together. Jung-bae does not survive their rebellion, though, and is killed by the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) during Squid Game season 2’s ending.

While speaking with Radio Times, Seo-hwan admits that he does not know any plot details about season 3 due to his character’s death. As a fan of the series, he theorizes that Gi-hun may take revenge against the other players. Seo-hwan discusses how it would be heartbreaking for Jung-bae to see his friend going down this dark path, but that he thinks it is possible after everything that has been taken from Gi-hun, including his hope. I know nothing about season 3, but as a viewer and a fan myself, I think there could be three possibilities. One would be Gi-hun losing all hope, and the second, him becoming even more vengeful. But the third possibility would be him becoming vengeful towards the players, not the people behind the game. If I were Jung-bae, I think it would be most heartbreaking to see Gi-hun go all vengeful and spiteful towards the players.

What This Means For Squid Game

The Front May Succeed In Breaking Gi-hun

Gi-hun feeling hopeless and becoming more vengeful seems like a plausible direction for his character to go in during Squid Game season 3’s story. Channeling that hopelessness and vengeance towards the other players would be a more surprising development. Despite the many horrors and losses he has endured inside and outside the games, Gi-hun still believes in the best of humanity, and is consistently willing to risk his own life to help others, just as he does during season 2’s Red Light, Green Light competition.

This inherent optimism and resilience leads to the Front Man twist as the powerful character enters the games and is intent on breaking Gi-hun’s will. If Gi-hun does turn on his fellow players, the Front Man will arguably have succeeded in breaking Gi-hun, regardless of how the games pan out. This would make season 3 even darker than seasons 1 and 2, as the show’s moral center will no longer exist, and no one may be able to bring Gi-hun back from such a dark place.

Gi-hun Will Not Go Down This Dark Path

Squid Game showcases the worst of humanity, but it also highlights that humanity’s goodness can endure even in the most brutal circumstances. Seeing Gi-hun betray and kill other Squid Game players would be too bleak even for this show. Before Oh Il-nam died (O Yeong-su), Gi-hun proved that his cynical viewpoint of humanity was wrong. In the end, Gi-hun will likely prove the same point to the Front Man, and Squid Game‘s protagonist will not lose his all his morality along the way.
