Sadie Sink recalls the emotional last day of filming Stranger Things as the Netflix show’s final season draws closer. The hit series, created by the Duffer Brothers, continues exploring supernatural occurrences in Hawkins, Indiana, and their connection to the horrifying Upside Down. Sink, who portrays Max Mayfield, was introduced in season 2 and her character’s storyline has been a rollercoaster, losing her brother (Dacre Montgomery) and shockingly falling victim to Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Though Max’s fate was left unknown, it was teased that Sink would return for Stranger Things season 5.
Now, speaking with ScreenRant at SXSW for her upcoming film, O’Dessa, Sink discussed what the final day on set was like. When filming completed in December, she revealed that “it was a really hard day.” Sink went on to explain the difficulty of leaving after so long and that she is “processing all of it,” but remains grateful for the past eight years. Read Sink’s comments below:
It’s so emotional. Yeah. We wrapped in December. Yeah. It was a really hard day, but yeah, crazy to kind of say goodbye to your childhood in that way. I think I’m still processing all of it, but what a beautiful experience I’ve been for eight years of my life.
What This Means For Stranger Things Season 5
The Farewell Will Be Bittersweet
The penultimate Stranger Things season answered various questions about Vecna and his motivations, but created more uncertainties regarding how widespread the Upside Down would become and what happened to Max. When audiences last saw Sink, her character had, at least momentarily, died under Vecna’s control and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was unable to reach her in an unconscious state. This launches a nervous excitement over Max’s eventual return, considering no one knows what her role will be or how much of season 5 she is actually in.

Sink’s latest comments about Stranger Things suggest that season 5, while likely packed with gripping moments, will be emotionally charged as well. Theories have already begun swirling about where the Max storyline may go, and whether she completely awakens from her coma. Also, another clash against Vecna or potential team-up with Eleven and the others, might spark heavily passionate reactions, similar to Stranger Things season 4’s ending. Whatever the outcome is for Max, her return could become a major part of the Stranger Things final run, making a subsequent goodbye all the more bittersweet.
Our Take On Max Returning For Stranger Things Season 5
Hopefully The Character Gets A Happy Ending
With a Stranger Things time-jump happening in season 5, the fate of Max becomes even more pressing, and given everything she has gone through, particularly last season, Sink’s character will hopefully get a happier wrap. As the stakes rise, an emotional death, or several, is a looming possibility for the show, but killing Max off after she nearly escaped her own demise would be tough to accept. Stranger Things hopefully has a kinder fate in store for her that will involve her reuniting with her friends.
