The Agency recently concluded its debut season on Showtime. Inspired by the French drama Le Bureau des Legendes with Michael Fassbender as covert CIA agent Martian, the spy thriller zeroes in on what happens when Martian is forced to leave his life undercover behind and return to London Station. This adjustment is complicated further by the unexpected return of Martian’s lover, Dr. Samia Fatima, who is played by Jodie Turner-Smith. The series is developed by Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth, with Joe Wright directing the first two episodes.
The Agency season 2 has already been confirmed after the adaptation’s strong viewership. Available to stream on Paramount+ with Showtime, in addition to its linear airings, the thriller is boosted by a strong ensemble surrounding Fassbender and Turner-Smith. They get a deeper focus as the season progresses, with one actor directly confirming their return.
John Magaro Will Return For The Agency Season 2
He Shares Key Scenes With Martian
John Magaro has clarified his return to the Showtime series following The Agency season 1 ending. Magaro, seen recently as Leonard Peabody / Harold Jenkins in The Umbrella Academy, plays CIA case officer Owen Taylor. The character is present in the show’s early episodes, having a crucial role in figuring out that one of the CIA’s key assets may be in trouble.
In an interview with Collider, while discussing his new movie Omaha, Magaro confirms that he’ll be back for The Agency season 2. The actor acknowledges that it was a change of pace for him, having typically only done shorter runs for the likes of Umbrella Academy and Orange is the New Black. In the quote below, Magaro mentions that he’s excited to work again with the team behind the spy thriller. That includes George Clooney, who is an executive producer on the show:
For Umbrella Academy, I only signed on for the first season. I was the villain on the first season. Then, on Orange is the New Black, I came in and guest starred every once in a while. Yeah, this is the first, so this is new territory for me. But it’s a great group. I love that group. I love [Michael] Fassbender, I love Jeffrey [Wright], Richard [Gere], Jodie [Turner-Smith], Ambreen [Razia]. It’s such a great group. And the people who are running the show, David [Glasser] and Grant [Heslov], and George Clooney, the George Clooney, it’s all really good. Showtime has been really pushing it.
It’s been really nice here because I’ve been running into people, and not just people in the business, but cops and security people on the street and things like that, who are like, ‘I’m watching The Agency. I really love it!’ So, it’s exciting to hear that.”
Margaro also talked about where he would like to see Owen go next, mentioning the fact that he gets more among The Agency‘s cast of characters deeper into the season. The actor discusses how the Showtime series is unlike James Bond because it “shows the neuroses” and makes a comparison to The Sopranos:
“I’m just excited to see where Owen goes. I really like playing him. He’s a fun character. I like the arc of his starting from such a befuddled place and then, by the end, kind of taking the reins and getting a little more confident in his role. So I’m excited to see him advance in his career, being more savvy as a CIA handler, but I also hope some of his humor… I like that he offers humor. What I love about the show is that it’s not like CIA, James Bond; it shows the neuroses, which is what I love about The Sopranos. It shows the neuroses of these mobsters. I like that Owen offers that because there are people in that who are humans. It’s a human business at the end of the day. So, I like that quality of The Agency, and I’m excited to go back.”
Our Take On Magaro’s Return As Owen Taylor
It Continues An Interesting Arc
Magaro is right about the trajectory of Owen Taylor, who is right by Martian’s side and facing off with an uncooperative former asset by season’s end. Bolstered by an excellent ensemble, which features Jeffrey Wright, Katherine Waterston, Alex Reznik, Andrew Brooke, Harriet Sansom Harris, India Fowler, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Reza Brojerdi, and Richard Gere. That’s without even mentioning the surprises in the guest roles. It makes The Agency all the more worth checking into when new episodes return.
