The Boys star Jack Quaid teases that season 5 will feature a more mature Hughie than past seasons. Created by Eric Kripke, the hit Prime Video superhero show returned for season 4 last year, continuing Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) quest for revenge against Homelander (Antony Starr) and Vought. The Boys season 5 is now in production, and it’s confirmed to bring the show to an end following the cliffhanger ending for Hughie and his allies in the season 4 finale.
In a recent interview with NME, Quaid provides an update on The Boys season 5, revealing that audiences can expect a more evolved Hughie this time around. In addition to teasing Hughie’s newfound maturity, the actor also comments on what it’s like to be filming the show’s last outing, calling the entire experience “bittersweet.” Check out Quaid’s comment below:
“It’s really bittersweet. I love that character so much. We’ve just started shooting and my god, Toronto is so cold. This season, Hughie is the most mature we’ve ever seen him. Obviously he’s been through a lot over the course of the show and it’s made him into someone who really has their head on their shoulders. That’s been really, really interesting to play considering where we first met him. It’s been wonderful.”
What Quaid’s Update Means For The Boys Season 5
Season 5 Can Fix One Big Season 4 Complaint
Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Boys season 4.
Though The Boys season 4 reviews were generally quite positive and the season was a viewership success, it wasn’t without criticism. One of the key complaints about season 4 was about its treatment of Hughie. The character remains somewhat stagnant in the season, with his storyline mostly involving a series of tragic things happening to him. His father, played by Simon Pegg, has an unfortunate health breakdown and dies, his boss is ripped apart in front of him, and he controversially spends one episode being tortured in Tek Knight’s (Derek Wilson) sex dungeon.

We Need To Talk About Hughie In The Boys Season 4
Hughie’s story has taken a dark turn in The Boys season 4, and we need to talk about the damage that the show could be doing to the character.
Quaid’s update, then, could mean that audiences are in for some growth from Hughie in season 5. It’s possible that the show will explore how the events of season 4 shaped this key The Boys character, potentially meaning he’ll be going out on a poignant note. There’s still plenty of plot for season 5 to wrap up involving Homelander and Vought, but purely on an emotional level, Hughie has gone through a tremendous amount since season 1, and it could make for a compelling end to show just how much he’s grown from everything.
The Boys season 5 started filming in November and is expected to continue into the middle of this year. It will likely release in 2026.
Our Take On Hughie’s Maturity In The Boys Season 5
How Much Can Hughie Change?
The key with any character in a TV show is evolving them over time without too fundamentally changing the figure that audiences enjoy watching. Hughie has always been a little out of his depth in the world of The Boys, and he’s prone to more emotional decision-making than someone like, say, Butcher, and this has been a big part of his appeal. Hughie, in many ways, is the heart of the show; he’s a relatively normal guy in a world of larger-than-life superheroes.
That being said, with season 5 set to bring the show to an end, there’s an exciting opportunity to shake up the character dynamics. Hughie was the audience’s way into this wacky world in season 1, but he’s not as naive as he once was, and it could be interesting to see him step up as a mature leading in The Boys season 5.
