Titus Welliver reveals Bosch: Legacy‘s season 4 plan after the show’s cancellation. The star played the title role of Harry Bosch in the flagship series Bosch, which ran from 2014 to 2021, before reprising his role in the sequel that follows the character’s life as a private investigator. Ahead of season 3’s premiere, it was announced that Bosch: Legacy would be coming to a close on Prime Video.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Welliver revealed that they were already planning for Bosch: Legacy season 4 when they received the call about the show’s cancellation. The actor shared that the news came midway through the making of season 3 as they were “getting very excited” about what season 4 would hold. While Welliver admitted that Bosch: Legacy‘s discontinuation was a “disappointment” and that he didn’t know the details, he suggested there could be a few things that contributed to the decision. Check out his comment below:
Ultimately, like Harry would say, I too am not necessarily a political or administrative animal. I am an artist. So, I got the call, actually, from Michael Connelly and one of our producers, Henrik Bastin, because we’d already been in conversations midway towards the end of the season talking about the next season and ideas, and we were getting very excited about the prospect of that. I got a call from them and they said they’re not going forward. It was a pretty brief conversation. We all expressed our disappointment, but we’ve all been doing this long enough to know that could happen.
I mean, if you consider certainly within the realm of network television, you’ll find a show and you’ll get into it, and five or six episodes in, that show gets canceled. You’re like “Wait! Hold up a minute, what happened?” Sometimes it’s a myriad of reasons that I don’t necessarily understand. I do understand that given the economy and things like that, there are a lot of studios that have been experiencing budgetary restrictions. But, as far as that, I’ve never had a conversation where I sat down and said, “Alright, tell me from point A to point B what it’s based on.”
That being said, I have a decade-long business relationship and personal relationship with Amazon Studios from the early inception of them getting into the entertainment business. I have a first-look development deal with Amazon. My business relationship with them continues outside of Bosch. And, you never know in Hollywood. I would not be shocked if at some point there was a revisitation. We all have to continue with our lives. But if the fans have anything to say about it… and they are very clear about their feelings!
What This Means For Bosch: Legacy Cancellation
Welliver Offers Possible Explanation For Bosch: Legacy’s Cancellation
Back when Prime Video announced the show’s cancellation, no explanation was given by the streamer or the creative team. However, executive producer Michael Connelly used the opportunity to tease Harry Bosch’s return in the upcoming Renee Ballard spinoff. Welliver’s comments offer some insight into the potential reasons behind Bosch: Legacy‘s cancellation, pointing towards money being the main factor instead of the show’s quality or storylines. It also seems that Bosch: Legacy‘s ending after three seasons won’t affect too much of the planned Maggie Q-led spinoff.

Both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy feature amazing characters and character development but out of the entire franchise, only 10 characters stand out.
In the same interview, Welliver also teased Bosch and Ballard’s storylines in the upcoming spinoff, with the two of them having a close working relationship and solving cold cases. Bosch will be a mentor and a parental figure for Ballard, whom Connelly based on a real-life officer. It seems that instead of moving forward with two Bosch shows, Prime Video is focusing on one, allowing the characters and the universe to continue.
Our Take On Bosch: Legacy’s Cancellation
Bosch Will Be Back
Bosch: Legacy‘s cancellation is an end for the show, for now, but it also marks a new beginning since Harry Bosch will be back on the small screen through the Ballard spinoff. Since Connelly has dedicated several novels to focusing on Ballard and the cold cases, it makes sense for the franchise to carry out plans with the Maggie Q-led series. While it’s never too much to have two Bosch series running at the same time, at a time when the budget is tight, this approach will allow the studios to focus their resources on producing the best show possible.
Bosch: Legacy will be missed, but this is hardly the end. With the sequel series bringing back fan-favorite characters, including Crate and Barrel, and paying homage to the flagship, the next Bosch show could very well do the same. Like Welliver said in his comments, there might even be a day when Amazon chooses to resurrect the sequel series.
