Madonna Biopic Miniseries In Development At Netflix With Stranger Things Director

A Madonna biopic miniseries is in development from the singer herself at Netflix, with a Stranger Things director attached to the project. A biopic about Madonna was originally in development for a theatrical release from Universal Pictures, with Julia Garner attached to star as the famous musician. However, plans for the movie fell through in January 2023, with Madonna later committing to her “The Celebration Tour,” a worldwide series of concerts from late 2023 to mid-2024. Since then, there hasn’t been any news on if an upcoming music biopic would feature the singer in any capacity.

Now, according to Variety, Madonna is teaming up with Netflix and Stranger Things director Shawn Levy to create a miniseries about her life as a musician. The show is in early development at the streaming platform, but is expected to showcase many aspects of her musical fame. It is currently unclear what the focus of the series will be, and there’s no word yet on who will be starring in the show.

What Madonna’s New Biopic Series Means For Her Career

The Singer Is About To Showcase Her Life To The World

Madonna has had a decorated musical career, becoming the best-selling female recording artist of all time from her 14 studio albums and multiple other songs recorded. Her latest album, 2019’s Madame X, became the ninth time she reached Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. She also earned $225.4 million from “The Celebration Tour,” showcasing a continued longevity for her decades-long career. Madonna’s movie roles also make her familiar to the world of filmmaking, including the documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare in 1991.

She’s also been passionate about developing a biopic based on her life for many years, having co-written two drafts for the previously cancelled movie. Since she’s already been involved in what’s considered one of the best music documentaries of all time, it makes sense for her to want to use her experience being in films to work behind-the-scenes developing the story of her life. This TV biopic, coupled with Levy’s involvement, seems like an opportunity to be more expansive with what the show explores, and how it adapts her history.

Shawn Levy is also best known for directing movies like Free Guy, The Adam Project, and Deadpool & Wolverine.
