NCIS: Origins Showrunner Previews Mike Franks’ Story In Back Half Of Season 1: “The Reality Is…”

This article contains discussion of sexual assault.

NCIS: Origins showrunner David J. North has previewed Mike Franks’ story in the back half of season 1, revealing what his next mission is going to be. Franks was first portrayed by Muse Watson in the original show, appearing as a guest star in seasons 3 through 13, and season 15. On the cast of NCIS: Origins, the Special Agent is portrayed by Kyle Schmid, acting as team leader in the various cases Camp Pendleton is tasked with. He also has important connections with people outside his team, with his girlfriend, Tish (Tonantzin Carmelo), being his primary relationship.

Speaking with TVLine, North revealed that Franks’ upcoming story in the last half of NCIS: Origins season 1 will focus on his hunt for the person who assaulted Tish, leaving her with the psychological trauma she’s currently dealing with. The showrunner explained how the Special Agent isn’t able to just leave the situation alone, indicating he’ll be actively pursuing this person when the show comes back. Check out what North had to say below:

Mike is going to be dealing with a personal issue of his own. Tish asked him to leave it alone when it comes to the guy who assaulted her, but the reality is that not pursuing the person who hurt his person is a difficult thing for Franks to do.

What North’s Statement Means For Franks As NCIS: Origins Continues

He’s Out For Revenge After What Happened To Tish

Tish’s assault was revealed in season 1, episode 7, when she asked Franks to stop looking for the man who caused her psychological trauma. However, the NIS leader hasn’t been able to do so, his love for her and seeking revenge triumphing over everything else. It’s clear from North’s statement that, for him, this is far from over, and something that will define his story in NCIS: Origins during season 1’s back half. However, with no concrete leads, his hunt could last for quite some time.

NCIS: Origins season 1 has a massive midseason finale with episode 10, setting up an eventful second half of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ origin story.

This is exacerbated by Tish wanting him to stop his search, potentially because his research drums up a past horror she clearly wants to forget. But with Franks asking Vera (Diany Rodriguez) to psychologically profile his girlfriend, and North’s confirmation he’s not backing down, his hunt could lead to major clues that result in retribution. Depending on what happens, the storyline could even extend into a potential NCIS: Origins season 2, since it’s still unclear just how complex a narrative his assault investigation will be.

Mike Franks looks upset in NCIS Origins

Given how much buildup Franks’ search has had since the very start of the show, whatever he discovers about the man who assaulted Tish might end up being a major shock for him. It’s not clear what this buildup means just yet, though, and whether the identity of the person will be someone he knows, or if it results in unforeseen consequences for the pair. Whatever happens, North’s response confirms NCIS: Origins‘ continued focus on the story, without giving away what will happen next.

NCIS: Origins returns with season 1, episode 11, “Flight of Icarus,” on Monday, January 27 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
