New British Thriller Series With Watchmen Star & Queen’s Gambit Creator Dives Into Cold Cases

Dept. Q gets its first trailer, revealing the new Netflix crime show from the creator of The Queen’s Gambit. Netflix continues to be a home for thrilling TV, with The Queen’s Gambit hitting the streaming service in 2020. Creator Scott Frank has next set his sights on Dept. Q, a crime thriller that stars Matthew Goode, who will be best known to many for starring in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2009), in addition to titles like The Imitation Game (2014), Downton Abbey, and The King’s Man (2021). Dept. Q also stars Leah Byrne, Kelly Macdonald, and Catriona Stirling.

Netflix now shares the first official trailer for Dept. Q, revealing Goode as Carl Morck, a brash detective who carries a lot of baggage after the murder of his partner. The show follows Morck as he becomes the head of a new department in Edinburgh that attempts to solve cold cases, connecting him with a new team that begins to uncover some dangerous secrets. What This Means For Dept. Q

Frank’s involvement in Dept. Q means the show comes with an impressive name behind the camera. The Queen’s Gambit was a major hit for Netflix, and currently sports Rotten Tomatoes scores of 96% and 94% from critics and audiences, respectively. Prior to tackling this hit Netflix chess show, which featured Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role, Frank wrote the Godless (2017) miniseries, Logan (2017), and Minority Report (2002).

From the trailer, Dept. Q has the makings of a hit British crime show. It appears to have similarities to series like Broadchurch and Slow Horses, both of which have been big hits with audiences due to their thrilling mystery elements, flawed characters, and elements of dark comedy. The rest of the Dept. Q cast also come with some impressive credits, with Macdonald having starred in Trainspotting (1996) and No Country for Old Men (2007) and Shirley Henderson having played Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter franchise.
