New Prime Video Show From Gilmore Girls Creator Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

The new show from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is performing well on Rotten Tomatoes. Sherman-Palladino, who is a six-time Emmy winner, began her career as a writer and producer for series such as Roseanne, Love and Marriage, and Veronica’s Closet before creating the dramedy Gilmore Girls. The show, which starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as a mother and daughter living in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, ran for seven seasons on The WB (later The CW) beginning in 2000. The cast also featured a number of rising stars, such as Melissa McCarthy, Jared Padalecki, and Milo Ventimiglia.

However, Sherman-Palladino’s career extends far beyond the 153 Gilmore Girls episodes. Since the show ended in 2007, she has gone on to create a number of other series. These include the short-lived The Return of Jezebel James starring Parker Posey, the similarly short-lived ballet dramedy Bunheads starring Sutton Foster (which she co-created with Lamar Damon), and the popular Prime Video comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which ran for five seasons and helped cement the rise of House of Cards breakout star Rachel Brosnahan, who will next be seen playing Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman.

Étoile Has Earned A Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

Critics Have Overwhelmingly Supported The New Series

Prime Video’s Étoile is performing well with critics. Sherman-Palladino co-created the series with her husband and frequent collaborator Daniel Palladino. It follows two struggling ballet companies in New York City and Paris who trade dancers in an effort to reinvigorate their lineups and features a robust ensemble cast that includes Luke Kirby (The Deuce), Lou de Laâge (Respire), Gideon Glick (Maestro), David Alvarez (2021’s West Side Story), Ivan du Pontavice (Children of the Night), David Haig (Florence Foster Jenkins), and two-time César Award winner Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist).

Luke Kirby played recurring character turned series regular Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated enough reviews of Étoile to give the show an official Tomatometer score. Although the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, the show has earned a solid 88% Tomatometer score tabulated from eight different critics’ reviews.

One of the reviews that has yet to be added is the one by ScreenRant‘s own Rebecca VanAcker, who gave the show a similarly solid score of 7 out of 10. Read an excerpt from her Étoile review below:

If you’re a fan of the Palladinos’ other work, as I am, it’s pretty likely you’ll enjoy Étoile. Not only are there appearances from Gilmore Girls and Maisel alums, Étoile has plenty of hallmarks of the Palladinos’ past shows. They’ve become known for unapologetically brash, funny women who take up a lot of space, and Étoile is no exception. Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge), in particular, is an absolute firecracker and a ton of fun to watch, but there’s a lot of pain and passion in the character as well. That level of nuance takes her to another level and makes her a real standout of the series.

What This Means For Étoile

It Hits The Exact Middle

Ultimately, Étoile lands roughly in the middle of the shows created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. Her top two series are Bunheads (100%) and Mrs. Maisel (90%), while the ones that fall below her new series are Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (87%), Gilmore Girls (which has an average of 87% from the three seasons that have scores), and Jezebel James (13%, her only Rotten score). Given the fact that Bunheads has a superior score but boasts a similar ballet-centric setting and only ran for one season may not spell good news for the longevity of Étoile.

Étoile debuts on Prime Video on April 24.
