Oscar-Nominated Supernatural Star Explains Why They Rejected Villain Role In The Boys

Despite Supernatural ending in 2020, The Boys has set a trend of many reunions from the fantasy show’s cast since Eric Kripke created both series. The CW horror fantasy starred Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as two demon-hunting brothers battling the forces of darkness, heaven, and hell. Kripke served as the showrunner for Supernatural’s first five seasons, which ultimately continued beyond his leadership for another ten installments and became one of the longest-running American fantasy television series to date.

In 2019, Kripke and Prime Video brought the world of Garth Ennis’s dark and brutal comic book series The Boys to the small screen. The show’s titular group of vigilantes set out to take down violent, narcissistic, and cold-hearted superheroes in a world where those with powers have no responsibilities and are the tools of corporate aspirations. Throughout its run, many stars from Supernatural have appeared in the superhero series, including Ackles as Soldier Boys. While there are hopes that Padalecki will appear in The Boys season 5, which will be its last, another alum revealed rejecting a villain role.

Sterling K. Brown Almost Had A Major Villain Role In The Boys

The Actor Previously Starred As A Villainous Vampire Hunter In Supernatural

Before becoming an Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated actor, Sterling K. Brown once had a recurring role in Supernatural seasons 2 and 3. He portrayed Gordon Walker, an acquaintance of the Winchester brothers. The vampire hunter turns his sights on Sam (Padalecki) after hearing a prophecy, leading to his own turning into a vampire and eventually death by Sam’s hands. Since then, the actor has appeared in many acclaimed projects, including This Is Us, American Fiction, and The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

Sterling K. Brown has won major awards for his work in Oscar and Emmy-winning movies and TV shows throughout his career.

In an interview with Variety, Brown revealed that Kripke had offered him the opportunity to play an antagonist in The Boys. However, with the extensive commitment for a full season, the actor rejected the role, which was a personal disappointment. Despite the show’s prominence and his own regret, Brown felt comfortable rejecting the role due to the options he had elsewhere. Check out Brown’s response below:

“I think it was a bad guy [role], because it was very tempting, But a full-season arc, they are in Toronto — it’s tough. Listen, these are Champagne problems I’m talking about here! But because I’m blessed enough to already have certain things in place, I get a chance to be a bit more choosy.”

Our Thoughts On Brown Rejecting The Boys Appearance

The Actor’s Response Likely Rules Out Future Offers

The Boys already features several Supernatural veterans in key roles throughout its run so far. While Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have most notably appeared as Soldier Boy and Kessler, Lesley Nicol, Jim Beaver, and Nathan Mitchell have also made previous appearances on Supernatural. As such, with each of these stars ending up having substantial roles in The Boys, many may wonder who Brown could have played.

8 Supernatural Actors We’d Love To See In The Boys

With Jensen Ackles playing Solider Boy in The Boys, there are several other Supernatural alums who should now appear alongside the antihero Supes.

However, while Kripke may be hoping to bring back as many Supernatural alums as he can, including Padalecki, Brown is unlikely to join the cast at this point. While the role may have been substantial, it appears that the conditions surrounding filming turned him off from joining the series, likely ruling him out of any opportunities to join The Boys. Now, it is a matter of seeing who else could appear before the final episodes come in 2026.
