Patrick Dempsey is returning to broadcast television as the lead star in Fox’s new thriller series, Memory of a Killer. Dempsey is best known for playing Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka “McDreamy,” in the early seasons of the long-running ABC series Grey’s Anatomy until his departure in season 11 in 2015, which also marked his last network television show until now.

Per Deadline‘s report, Dempsey is set to lead Fox’s straight-to-series Memory of a Killer, where he will play a hitman battling with early-onset Alzheimer’s. The series, penned by Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone, takes inspiration from the 2003 Belgian film De Zaak Alzheimer, previously remade into Memory by director Martin Campbell and with Liam Neeson playing the lead role.

What This Means For Memory Of A Killer

Memory Of A Killer Stars Patrick Dempsey As Angelo Ledda

Memory of a Killer marks Dempsey’s first network television show after Grey’s Anatomy. However, the star has remained active in the television world in addition to starring in movies, including Scream 3, Bridget Jones’s Baby, and Ferrari. He recently appeared in Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin, in which he played the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide department during the time Dexter joined the workforce. Having played a handful of sheriff and law enforcement roles, it’s rare to see Dempsey as an antihero.

Did Scream 7 Recast Patrick Dempsey With Joel McHale? Who Sidney’s Husband Mark Is

Joel McHale has officially been cast as Sidney’s husband, Mark, in Scream 7, despite previously implying she married Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid.

The new thriller show Memory of a Killer tells a redemption story about Angelo Ledda (Dempsey), whose double life as a hitman and an upstate photocopier salesman with a family is threatened in the wake of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the same disease that killed his older brother. While facing the loss of memories, Angelo must search deep into his past hits to save his family from his enemies.

Our Take On Patrick Dempsey As A Hitman In Memory Of A Killer

Angelo Ledda Has A More Complex Character Arc Than Derek Shepherd

Younger Captain Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey) in Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 9

Despite being set in the underground crime world, Memory of a Killer sees Dempsey in a more morally complicated role compared to Dr. Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy. The new series also gives Dempsey a lot to juggle with. Not only will he be tasked with protecting his pregnant daughter, but he will also discover the secrets behind his wife’s accident, all while facing his own mortality.

Angelo Ledda in Memory of a Killer sounds like a complex role that will challenge the Scream 3 star in a good way and further expand what audiences normally expect from him. Given Patrick Dempsey’s track record of playing good or morally gray characters who fans can easily root for, the new Fox thriller series already has a strong lead that will win over viewers in no time.
