Severance Season 2’s Miss Huang Actor Had The Set Freaked Out While Filming: “You’re Terrifying”

Severance star Sarah Bock opens up about the cast’s reaction to the hit sci-fi thriller’s newest addition, Miss Huang. Three years after its award-winning premiere, the Apple TV+ original recently returned to Lumon Industries. Bock joins the cast in season 2, which also features Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, and John Turturro. Following the explosive Severance season 1 finale, Mr. Milchik (Tramell Tillman) was promoted to manager. The Macodata Refinement Department (MDR) were later shocked to see Miss Huang as deputy supervisor when she looked like she couldn’t be older than 16.

In an interview with Vulture, Bock revealed that the Severance crew was terrified by Miss Huang. Though the actor didn’t feel unsettled by the character, she had quite the effect on her co-stars and the surrounding creatives. Here’s what she had to say:

When I played her, I didn’t feel very scary. But at the end of the day, crew members would come up to me like, “You freaked me out. You’re terrifying.” I was like, Okay, heard. I understand who this character is.

What The Severance Crew’s Reaction To Miss Huang Means

Miss Huang Furthers Lumon’s Mystery

Throughout Severance season 2, Miss Huang carries an exceptionally eerie presence. Despite being one of the youngest employees at Lumon Industries, she carries herself with an air of quiet authority, never questioning her role or showing hesitation among the MDR employees. She delivers her words bluntly, and with a swift smile. When asked by Mark W. (Bob Balaban) “why she’s a child,” she responds matter-of-fact with, “Because of when I was born.” Unlike Milchick, who balances his authority with moments of performative warmth, Bock’s Huang seems cold and methodical, making her one of the most unnerving additions to Severance season 2.

Severance season 2, episode 5 features an all-new Kier Eagan story, but how true is Milchick’s tale of Swedish kings, and what is Lumon up to?

While the sci-thriller has yet to reveal further details about the young manager, that has not stopped viewers from theorizing about Miss Huang’s identity. As the season unfolds, it seems more likely that she was exposed to Kier’s philosophy at a young age, and grew up under the influence of Lumon’s cult-like society. In Severance season 2, episode 5, Miss Huang tries to dissuade Milchik from having a funeral for one of the severed employees because it “makes them feel like people,” suggesting she may not herself be a severed employee and takes the company’s values rather seriously.

It’s no surprise that Severance continues to unnerve both its characters and the audience, but the fact that Bock’s performance as Miss Huang genuinely unsettled the crew is a testament to how effectively the show builds its eerie atmosphere. Lumon Industries has always been a place of quiet, corporate horror, but Miss Huang’s age and detachment from the innies introduce a new kind of psychological discomfort to Severance. She doesn’t need to scream, threaten, or even physically intimidate the employees like Patricia Arquette’s Cobel did with Mark S.; her sheer presence is enough to send shivers down the spine.
