An Emmy Award-winning actor has been cast to play the dad of Jimmy (Jason Segel) in Shrinking. The Apple TV+ series is set to return for season 3 as Jimmy continues to help his patients with unorthodox methods. In addition to Segel, Shrinking‘s star-studded cast also includes Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, and Ted McGinley. Brett Goldstein, who co-created the series along with Segel and Bill Lawrence, also joined the cast in season 2.
As per Deadline, Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels is joining the cast to play Jimmy’s dad in Shrinking season 3. Daniels will have a guest arc in the upcoming season. While Daniels has starred in comedy movies like Dumb and Dumber, Shrinking is the actor’s first significant role in a live-action comedy series. Most of his television roles have been in dramas, including The Newsroom and the Netflix miniseries Godless, both of which won him Emmy Awards.

Jimmy’s Dad Will Likely Impact Three Major Characters
While Jimmy has briefly mentioned his dad before, little is known about him, and he has never been in the series before. That is set to change with Daniels debuting as the character in Shrinking season 3. Getting to know Jimmy’s dad will provide more insight into Jimmy, his childhood, and the unresolved issues he has been dealing with even before the tragic loss of his wife Tia (Lilan Bowden). As the grandfather of Jimmy’s daughter, Alice (Maxwell), Daniels’ character is also set to have an impact on her story this season.
Jimmy’s dad will hopefully get to share scenes with Paul (Ford) as well. Paul is Jimmy’s mentor and is a paternal figure to him. Seeing Paul take on this role may be difficult for Jimmy’s dad to accept and could lead to him being jealous. Paul is unafraid to tell people harsh truths, though, and if he sees Jimmy’s dad being jealous or insecure, Paul will not mince words about needing to get that behavior under control, and to not let that frustration be taken out on Jimmy.
