Squid Game Season 3’s Last Round Was “Challenging” & “Most Difficult To Shoot,” Says Gi-hun Actor

season 3 gets a new tease from star Lee Jung-jae, who reveals that the final game was very challenging to film. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the hit Netflix series returned for its sophomore outing last December after debuting back in 2021, picking up the story with Lee’s Seong Gi-hun as he attempts to take down the titular games. Squid Game season 3 is now confirmed to bring the record-breaking show to an end after the season 2 finale, with a release date currently set for June 27.

In a recent interview with The Credits, the Motion Pictures Association’s online magazine, Lee speaks briefly about Squid Game season 3, revealing that the final game in the show was a tough one to pull off. He doesn’t provide any hints about what this game is, but it sounds like audiences should expect a physically taxing final challenge for Gi-hun to cap the show off. Check out Lee’s comment below:

“In the first season, it becomes really difficult for Gi-hun as these episodes go on, both physically and mentally. I would say that the most difficult game I had to shoot was the last game of the first season, which is Squid Game. I think of all of the seasons all together, the most challenging and the most difficult one was the last round that will be seen in season 3. That was the most difficult to shoot.”

Squid Game season 2 ends with Gi-hun’s rebellion failing. After posing as a contestant throughout the season, Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) puts a stop to the uprising, shooting Gi-hun’s best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Gi-hun will seemingly be entering season 3 from a place of weakness and defeat, and his time in the games is evidently not over just yet. There is one more tease after the season 2 credits roll that sets up Gi-hun’s story moving forward.

Will Gi-hun Become The New Front Man In Squid Game Season 3?

Squid Game season 2 gave a lot of focus to the Front Man, but it is entirely possible that Gi-hun could take up the mantle in Squid Game season 3.

After the main season 2 story ends, the Squid Game season 2 mid-credits scene features Young-hee, the giant “Red Light, Green Light” doll ready for action alongside a male counterpart, later revealed to be named Chul-su. A new and potentially far more deadly twist on this classic game, then, is coming in Squid Game season 3, and Lee’s comment seemingly confirms that he makes it through this challenge unharmed. Season 1 ended with essentially a one-on-one fight to the death, and it sounds like season 3 won’t be taking this same approach with its final game.

The games themselves and the show’s premise are obviously major reasons for Squid Game‘s success. The games vary in exciting ways, with different character skill sets excelling at different types of challenges. There is often also a degree of luck involved. What has remained fairly consistent, however, is that every game is some kind of variation on a familiar children’s game, and that seems likely to remain true heading into season 3.

Though season 1’s final game wasn’t particularly complex or as involved as something like the marbles game, it was still thrilling because of the high stakes and the emotional impact it had on Gi-hun. The final game in season 3 sounds like it is going to be more complex than this, but hopefully it retains that same level of intensity and focus on character. Many questions remain about Squid Game season 3, but it already sounds like the show will be going out with a bang.
