Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains his conditions for continuing the Squid Game universe beyond season 3. Squid Game season 2 was released to Netflix on December 26, reuniting viewers with Gi-hun as he embarks on a new quest to take down the games from within. Season 2’s cliffhanger ending teases the release of a final season in 2025, which would likely wrap up the loose thread seeded in the season. Squid Game season 3 does not yet have an official release date, but a Netflix Korea leak suggested that the final season could be arriving on June 27.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang explains under what conditions he would continue the Squid Game universe. The creator began by clearly stating that he sees “the third season as being the finale to this story.” He will finish out the arc of Seong Gi-hun, thus finishing this narrative. If he were to ever return to the Squid Game universe, he would want it to “be about different characters with a different story arc.” One example that he thought of was doing a series that explores the history of the masked guards. Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story. That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun. If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.

Squid Game’s Success Will Put Pressure On The Series To Continue
Squid Game is a global sensation, which will put pressure on Hwang to continue the series. Much like the first installment, Squid Game season 2 has been incredibly popular thus far. During its first week on Netflix, it brought in 68 million views. This made it the top non-English-language show by a wide margin, and outperformed all the English-language television programming on Netflix, including two football games. These huge numbers will put pressure on the universe to continue beyond Squid Game season 3, whether Hwang likes it or not.
There have also already been spinoffs of the Squid Game universe in various forms. This has included, for example, the reality competition show Squid Game: The Challenge, which saw people play children’s games for a $4.56 million cash prize. A multiplayer video game titled Squid Game: Unleashed was also developed and released, offering yet another platform for fans to explore the Squid Game universe. As such, a Squid Game television spinoff would be an unsurprising development.

This broadened focus demonstrates Hwang’s interest in showing a broader array of characters, making this expansion more welcome for viewers.
