St. Denis Medical’s Potential Connections To Other NBC Shows Addressed By Showrunner

A crossover event could be on the horizon for St. Denis Medical. The comedic procedural is currently in the latter half of its first season, which is expected to run for five more episodes. It is often described as a spiritual successor to The Office, but the medical aspect has set the series apart. St. Denis has earned positive reviews with ScreenRant‘s Sarah Little describing it as a series that “has potential” and that “the actors are truly the ones who make the show worth watching“.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Rachel Foertsch at the 2025 SXSW convention, co-creator and showrunner Eric Ledgin spoke about the show’s future. In particular, he reflected on the idea of a potential crossover with other NBC shows. While Ledgin believes that it would be difficult, he shows real interest in crossing over with Happy’s Place. Check out his response below:

Eric Ledgin: I suppose it could. I understand the appeal and the excitement of crossovers. I’m a fan of many shows that I would love to see smashed together and see what happens. And then being on the show running side of it, I’m like, “It’s enough to be thinking about one show’s universe.” I don’t really need to be thinking about how the characters from Happy’s Place are going to incorporate into there on top of that. [Laughs] I feel like I have enough on my plate.

ScreenRant: Reba’s character [from Happy’s Place] in St. Denis Medical would be a fun time, though.

Eric Ledgin: Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m like, “How can we not do that?

They Could Be On The Horizon

If St. Denis did have a crossover episode, it would not be the first to attempt it. The One Chicago franchise has had several crossovers, which have had major implications for its characters. Combining those shows was a natural step, given the existing shared universe, but NBC took the unusual move of bridging the gap between the FBI universe, One Chicago, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. These crossovers brought high ratings and massive events. St. Denis could very well cross over with those productions, while also adding comedy to each.

St. Denis Medical has already been renewed for a second season.

A crossover would also enable NBC to profit off of ABC’s recent crossover. The connection between Abbott Elementary and FXX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia helped to bring two major Disney-run shows together. In doing so, it drew over 3.5 million viewers, per Programming Insider. ABC now plans on combining 9-1-1 with Doctor Odyssey on March 20. With crossovers more prevalent than ever, NBC could be interested in capitalizing on its own shows. Even if it does not plan to mix comedy and drama, Night Court and Happy’s Place remain distinct possibilities as comedies with similar tones.

Our Take On Potential St. Denis Crossovers

They Could Very Well Work

St. Denis has often been compared to The Office, and for good reason. Both shows have a remarkably similar sense of humor, and they both focus on twisting familiar and dry workplaces into hilarious sets. If St. Denis Medical does have a crossover, it would be a distinct difference from the original show. After all, The Office never had a major crossover. While it would likely be a distraction from ongoing storylines, it would still be a major distinguishing element that could strip away some of the similarity criticisms. It would be a great move for the medical comedy.
