Star John Boyd Promises “Really Dark” Storyline For Scola

John Boyd, who plays Special Agent Stuart Scola on FBI, teases an intense and emotional upcoming episode in season 7. On January 28, CBS’ long-running procedural returned with season 7, episode 9, focusing on Boyd’s character, who had to relive his brother’s death when the team worked to thwart a terrorist threat. While Scola has been a key member of the FBI cast for several seasons, much of his past remains a mystery. However, more answers are on the way.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Boyd talked about his favorite upcoming episode in season 7. While the actor couldn’t share too many details, he revealed that the episode will center on Scola’s past and his experience while at military school. Boyd teased the episode, saying it involves a more mature, seasoned Scola.” Read his full comments below:

Yeah, there’s an episode we’re doing right now. I can’t say too much about it, but we find out that because Scola was a bit wild as a teenager, his parents sent him to a military school upstate.

And we find out about some things that happened up there during the case. It’s a really interesting episode. It’s really heavy, really dark, and it’s a more mature, seasoned Scola navigating through some serious stuff in his past. I can’t wait for the fans to see it. I think it’s going to be pretty powerful.

What This Means For FBI Season 7

A New Layer To Scola’s Character

Boyd’s comments suggest that FBI season 7 will continue to dig deeper into Scola’s backstory, which was somewhat unexplored in previous seasons. While Scola has grown into a dedicated and skilled agent, new revelations about his past could shed light on his motivations, his relationships, and even why he decided to join the FBI. The fact that Scola was sent to military school due to reckless behavior as a teen suggests that he may have struggled with authority before finding his footing. The upcoming episode could explore how his past shaped him and if there’s any unresolved trauma that lingers.

Given Boyd’s emphasis on the episode being “dark” and “heavy,it’s likely that whatever happened in Scola’s past will still hold significant emotional weight for him. It is safe to assume that a case may force Scola to confront his past, perhaps with the investigation having ties to his time at military school. Whether it’s an old acquaintance, a past event resurfacing, or something more sinister, the plot could put Scola’s capacity to remain objective in the field to the test. The episode could also set the stage for further storylines revolving around Scola in FBI season 8.

A Standout Moment For Boyd In FBI

Scola has been a fan-favorite character on FBI, yet much of his backstory remains unexplored in comparison to some of his colleagues. This upcoming episode provides a rare opportunity to see him in a new light, allowing for more character growth. This also allows FBI to highlight the psychological toll of the job. Scola has experienced a lot in prior seasons, including personal losses and intense cases. If the episode pushes him on a deep, personal level, it could lead to one of Boyd’s most powerful performances yet.

FBI airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and is available to stream the following day on Paramount+.
