Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has teased the future of the franchise as its upcoming movie brings the series’ “first chapter” to a close. The upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, titled The Immortal Man, will see Cillian Murphy return as Tommy Shelby, bringing an end to his story from the original series. The film wrapped production on December 13, 2024, and will be distributed through Netflix, although an exact release window has yet to be revealed. The franchise is also set to expand with both a spinoff and a prequel thanks to the original’s success.
Speaking on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Knight promised the Peaky Blinders movie would be the end of the show’s “first chapter,” with plenty of plans in place for the future. The creative promises he has plenty of ideas for how the franchise could expand, with stories that could keep its universe alive for quite some time. Check out what Knight had to say below:
[A] fitting end to the first chapter…. As long as there’s an appetite for it and I’ve got stories to tell, then why not?
What Knight’s Statement Means For The Future Of Peaky Blinders
The Original Series Was Just The Start
Two spinoffs were announced in 2023, the first of which is an upcoming Peaky Blinders prequel about Polly (Helen McCrory) and her early days in the family. The next is a spinoff based in Boston, Massachusetts, taking place several decades after the events of the original series. While the first of these shows is directly connected to the original, the one taking place overseas signals multiple crime shows taking place at different times and locations can become part of the franchise.

Are Peaky Blinders & A Thousand Blows Set In The Same Universe? Steven Knight’s New Crime Show Sets Up Huge Franchise Potential
Steven Knight’s two crime drama shows – Peaky Blinders and A Thousand Blows – could take place in the same universe and form a larger franchise.
As of writing, it’s unclear what other ideas Knight may have for the franchise’s future. However, his statement clearly indicates the series is just the start of a much larger plan, seemingly focusing on criminal organizations at various points in history. Since Peaky Blinders pulled real-world inspiration from the 1870s gang of the same name, its Boston spinoff will no doubt focus on the real criminal underworld in the city’s history. The same could be true for any other series Knight has in mind for the franchise’s expansion.
Our Take On Peaky Blinders Becoming A Larger Franchise
The Show Is A Perfect Starting Point
If the Peaky Blinders franchise really does expand to look at different crime organizations around the world, it could evolve into a thrilling shared universe. There are plenty of gangs across history that could make for dramatic, tense groups to follow, with Boston potentially just being the start for new locations. Because The Immortal Man is being described as the end of the beginning, there might be decades of story left to tell as the show’s expansion continues.
