Suits LA Creator Explains Why Original Character Is Returning In New Spinoff Following Audience Concerns

Suits L.A. creator Aaron Korsh candidly explains why the high-profile spinoff is bringing back an original cast member. Premiering on NBC at 9 PM ET on February 23, Suits L.A. takes the network television approach to extending a franchise. Although it is largely a new setting and a new cast of characters, led by Arrow star Stephen Amell as entertainment lawyer Ted Black, the spinoff will feature Gabriel Macht returning as Suits original Harvey Specter in a recurring capacity.

Korsh, who also created the original Suits, responded to a since-deleted post on X to explain why Harvey is coming back for Suits L.A. and candidly shared that network executives “very much wanted one original member.” He explained that Harvey makes the most sense in terms of returning characters, though he added that the project was not initially conceived as connecting to Suits at all. It Goes Back To Why The Spinoff Was Created

The new show takes cues from the original. It’s set in Los Angeles, with Ted’s firm said to be at a crisis point as the spinoff begins. The story will see lawyers vying for power and getting into office romances, with a main cast that also includes Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg. However, the spinoff kicked off after Suits became a huge streaming phenomenon in 2023 once it was added to Netflix, dominating the streaming charts for months.

Victoria Justice, Troy Winbush, Alice Lee, Rachelle Goulding, and Azita Ghanizada are part of the recurring and guest cast.

From that vantage point, it makes sense that executives would want a firm connection to the original. Harvey marries Donna (Sarah Rafferty) in the Suits series finale. Unlike Mike (Patrick J. Adams) who is married to Meghan Markle’s Rachel Zane, there is nothing that would make his return a little strained.

NBC unveils a new trailer for the upcoming legal drama spinoff Suits LA, which stars Stephen Amell as a new character in the Suits universe.

It’s not to say that other original Suits actors won’t be able to cameo as the spinoff moves along. But based on the social media post, Korsh wanted to establish the new series and allow it to stand on its own before leaning into the history of the USA Original. The tease of how Amell’s character and Ted know each other should make for an exciting reveal.

In the preview for Suits: L.A., Ted is having a conversation about Harvey. One of the characters notes, in turn, that Harvey has a considerable ego. Ted says, with admiration, that this is what he likes about the Suits character. It could make for a fun dynamic, especially if Macht decides to stick around for the long haul.
