The Handmaid’s Tale Sequel Show Casts Its Young Protagonist With A Connection To Gilead

Hulu’s upcoming series The Testaments, a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, has cast the role of Daisy, a Canadian teenager with ties to Gilead. The spinoff is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, and follows the perspectives of three women: Aunt Lydia, Agnes Jemima, and Daisy. The story of The Testaments is set to explore how Gilead’s regime is beginning to crumble from within, with this group of women playing a crucial role in its downfall.

According to Variety, Lucy Halliday has been cast in the role of Daisy, joining an ensemble that features The Handmaid’s Tale veteran Ann Dowd, who will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia, and Chase Infiniti (Presumed Innocent) as Agnes. Bruce Miller will return as showrunner and executive producer for the follow-up series.

What Daisy’s Casting In The Testaments Means

The Highly-Anticipated Sequel Moves Closer To Reality

The Testaments is the follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale, which will air final season on Hulu in April. In the book, Aunt Lydia is revealed to be a mole for Mayday and finds an unlikely allyship with June’s children, Agnes (Hannah) and Daisy (Nichole). The season 5 finale of The Handmaid’s Tale has hinted at Aunt Lydia’s growing doubts, particularly after witnessing the brutal treatment of Esther Keyes (Mckenna Grace) at the hands of the Commanders. Lydia, Hannah, and Nichole will be some of the many Handmaid’s Tale characters who return in The Testament.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a bleak, tragic TV show by definition, but some episodes are even more horrifying and heartbreaking than others.

Halliday’s casting as Daisy/Nichole continues to round out the ensemble for The Testaments. Halliday recently finished filming California Schemin’ with James McAvoy and has already gained recognition for her role in Blue Jean, which earned her a Scottish BAFTA and a British Independent Film Award nomination. Since Nichole’s story in The Testaments sees her raised by an adoptive family, Hulu’s adaptation may have to address a grim fate for June and Luke and make several changes to The Handmaid’s Tale sequel book.

A Promising Step Forward

Though The Testaments has been in development since 2023, Hulu has yet to officially green light the series. However, the casting of another key character with an acclaimed actor on board is a promising sign that development is progressing. With its major roles now being filled, an official green light could be on the horizon. The growing momentum suggests that Hulu is steadily moving forward with its plans to expand The Handmaid’s Tale universe, and with the original series set to conclude soon, The Testaments could begin with a late 2025 filming date.
