The Office
reboot gets a new production update from an original star, who also teases how his character returns. Based on the British sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, NBC’s version of the workplace comedy aired for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013, with Greg Daniels at the helm as showrunner. Now, Daniels is behind a reboot of The Office, rumored to be called The Paper, starring Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, which takes place at a failing Midwestern newspaper.
During a recent interview with Today, original Office cast members Oscar Nuñez, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Creed Bratton, Kate Flannery, Leslie David Baker, and Ellie Kemper reunite to look back on the show on its 20th anniversary, with Nuñez confirming that he will return in the upcoming reboot as accountant Oscar Martinez. Nuñez shares a brief status update on the reboot, revealing that it’s currently in the editing process, before Kinsey, who played fellow accountant Angela Martin, shares a new tidbit about how Oscar returns. Check out the exchange below:
Nuñez: “They’re still editing and stuff.”
Kinsey: ”Isn’t the understanding that you’re following the documentary crew to a new location and you happen to be there?”
Nuñez: “That’s correct. More will be revealed, as my wife likes to say […] It’s very, very exciting.”
What This Means For The Office Reboot
How The Original Show Sets Up Oscar’s Return
Nuñez was previously confirmed to be returning in The Office reboot as Oscar, but his latest update on the show’s status could provide some indication about when it will premiere. No release date has been officially set, but it sounds like the show could potentially make its way to audiences later this year. With the show currently in the editing stage, an official announcement or first piece of promotional material may now not be too far off.

There’s 1 Thing The Office Reboot Must Absolutely Not Repeat From The Original Show
The Office reboot needs to capture a lot of great things from the original show, but it can’t afford to repeat one major mistake from its predecessor.
As for the original The Office cast member’s return in the reboot, Nuñez’s latest update seemingly confirms that Oscar hasn’t switched professions to work at a newspaper. When the original show ends, Oscar is attempting to embark on a career in politics, and it’s possible that it’s this new career direction that leads to him ending up in the Midwest. It remains to be seen how exactly Oscar’s career in politics intersects with the reboot’s focus on a newspaper, but a political scandal of some sort could be on the horizon.
In addition to Gleeson and Impacciatore, new cast members for The Office reboot include: Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and Eric Rahill.
Our Take On The Office Reboot Update
The Reboot Has A Tricky Balance To Strike
There have been several attempts to recreate the magic of The Office‘s best seasons in various international remakes, but none of them have quite caught on in the same way. The reboot, however, could be different, as it is telling an entirely new story with Daniels as showrunner, both of which are promising signs. The reboot has a challenging line to walk as it attempts to recapture what was so special about the original show while also carving its own creative path forward, and it will be interesting to see how Nuñez’s return fits into this.
While it will be exciting to see Oscar once again after more than a decade, The Office reboot will hopefully not rely too heavily on his presence. Making Gleeson and Impacciatore’s new characters figures worth rooting for and spending time with will be crucial to the show’s success. Many questions remain about The Office reboot, but strides are evidently being made behind the scenes.
