The Ones That We Care About The Most

Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 4.

Yellowjackets

season 3 star Sophie Nélisse teases that more surprising character deaths are still to come in the remaining episodes. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the Showtime survival thriller show returned for season 3 last month, continuing its dual-timeline story of a high school girl’s soccer time surviving in the wilderness after a plane crash and the remaining survivors decades later. Yellowjackets season 3, episode 4, ends with the season’s most shocking moment so far, with adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) dying under mysterious circumstances.

In a recent interview with EW, Nélisse reveals that Lottie isn’t the only major Yellowjackets character to die in season 3. Though she won’t reveal who may be next to die, she does hint that it’s someone audiences care about. Check out her comment below:

“We had to throw a couple [death parties] this season. Courtney [Eaton] and I hosted one for this very special person. We bought tombstones, we had this collage of pictures that we’d gathered from everyone on set that we were rolling on the TV. We had a little pamphlet with their face on it and just posters everywhere and we ordered a really crazy cake.

“As we go, there’s obviously more characters that have to leave us, and the ones that we care about the most are the ones that have to go. I’ve always said this to people that die. I’m like, ‘It’s actually a testament to how good of an actor you are because we won’t kill you off if we don’t care about you [because] the audience won’t care either.’ We kill the characters that we are so attached to.”

Outside of more character deaths, Nélisse also says that “a lot of questions are answered” in the remaining episodes of season 3, and that there will be some new characters that join the show in an upcoming episode. She continues:

“That’s all I can say. New characters are getting introduced this season so that’s really fun and it just brought a whole other dynamic to the group as well. We have a lot of fun with them and it gets also very emotional at some point.”

What Nélisse’s Tease Means For The Rest Of Yellowjackets Season 3

Who Could Be Next To Die

The dual-timeline structure of the show means that the older and younger Yellowjackets cast members probably don’t interact all that much on set. There would likely be no need for adult Shauna actor Melanie Lynskey, for example, to be present during the filming of the ’90s scenes in the wilderness, and vice versa. Nélisse’s comment could, then, be interpreted as a hint that whichever character (or characters) dies in the upcoming episodes will be someone from the ’90 timeline.

Yellowjackets Timeline Explained: How Much Time Passes In The Show

Yellowjackets doesn’t state how long the girls have been stranded, but a few hints, such as Shauna’s pregnancy, help to form a more concrete timeline.

There are still a number of characters from the ’90s timeline that haven’t shown up in the present, meaning any number of them could be next to die. Coach Scott (Steven Krueger), for example, certainly seems like a likely candidate to die after his guilty verdict at the trial, but characters like Mari (Alexa Barajas) and Melissa (Jenna Burgess) also don’t show up in the present. As for Nélisse’s new characters comment, Hilary Swank is confirmed to appear in season 3, though it isn’t yet known who she will be playing.

It hasn’t yet been revealed what killed Lottie, but it’s entirely possible that other characters in the present timeline could be targeted next. There is no character in the present timeline that is truly safe, after all. That being said, it does seem unlikely that the show would kill off adult Shauna or adult Misty (Christina Ricci) at this point in its run, especially with hopes for Yellowjackets season 4 and beyond.

Lyle and Nickerson have previously revealed that they have a five-season plan for Yellowjackets.

Though Melissa could potentially be at risk, it’s possible that Swank will be playing the adult version of this character, just purely in terms of the two actors appearances. This would seemingly signal that Melissa will play a much bigger role in the episodes to come, and this would make sense given the romantic tension between her and Shauna. Many questions remain about Yellowjackets season 3, but there are evidently more surprises to come.
