Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 18.
Ghosts season 4, episode 18 aired Thursday, April 10 on CBS, picking up where the previous installment left off. The official synopsis reads: “Jay, Sam and the ghosts attempt to fix the ghost trap in hopes of getting Sasappis across the ghost boundary to visit his longtime crush, Shiki.” While Sas does end up using the device, he quickly regrets the decision. He realizes his heart may not be with Shiki, but still risks potential “smushing” after misinterpreting a conversation between Pete and Joan.
When speaking with ScreenRant about “Smooching and Smushing,” Román Zaragoza unpacks his character’s actions. The actor shares that there was a lot going on in Sas’ head at the time, causing him to spiral. He continues on to say that the ghost was likely lashing out by using the ghost trap, as he is immature and young at heart. Read Zaragoza’s full response below:
ScreenRant: Sas knew he had feelings for Joan, so what was it that pushed him to still go into the trap? Was he trying to lash out at her and Pete? Was it a desire for another connection?
Román Zaragoza: I think there were a lot of things that were going on in his head, at the time. At least for me, I was trying to come to grips. If people drop really big news and everything kind of mixes up what you previously had figured out, it kind of does send you on a spiral, and you’re like, “You know what? I got to do this. I got to go. We got to do it. We got to do it.” And then, “This person is helping me. Alright, we’re going.”
And it probably is a little bit of lashing out, because if he could just take a second to realize what he has in front of him is better than any romantic idea that he’s creating in his head…but he’s also young, he’s also immature, and he has that young heart that hasn’t loved really and hasn’t felt love and doesn’t really know.
So I think he had to go on that journey to see, “Oh my goodness, what am I doing? There’s a person right here in front of me.” I think that is a common thing that people fall into all the time where they don’t see what’s right in front of them. They’re constantly chasing and constantly craving more, when in reality, what’s right in front of them is what they needed.
Sasappis And Joan’s Ghosts Romance Explained
The Characters Meet In Season 4, Episode 17 “His Girl Shiki”
The ghosts discover that Sas is still a virgin at over five hundred years old, which prompts Pete to find him a partner. He brings Joan back to the mansion in season 4, episode 17, and she and Sas are immediately drawn to one another. However, Sas is still hung up on his long-time crush, Shiki, and is unable to fully commit to someone new.
Joan supports him through his journey, even encouraging Sas to use the ghost trap to get to her. After they share a particularly charged moment, Sas realizes he wants to be with Joan. However, following Joan and Pete’s improved conversation, Sas uses the ghost trap to pursue Shiki instead. He escapes with Thor’s help after learning that Joan does share his feelings.
