The White Lotus season 4 is prepping for a big shift, with series creator Mike White teasing a change in the show’s location. The Emmy-winning HBO dramedy wrapped up another installment, filled with highs and lows and even a handful of dead bodies. But while The White Lotus season 3 ending might have been teased as a supersized finale, which served as a way of saying goodbye to several characters, the already renewed fourth outing may feature a significant difference.
In a post-finale interview with Deadline, the series creator provides an update on The White Lotus season 4 and teases that the hit dramedy could move away from the beautiful beachfront locations that it has become known for. White wouldn’t say much more. But in the quote below, he does mention one aspect of the show that won’t change:
“For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the crashing waves of rocks vernacular but there’s always more room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels.”
What This Means For The White Lotus Season 4
It’s A Big Change Of Pace
Over the course of three seasons, the HBO show has established a few repeating patterns. Guests lounge by the waves, occasionally sniping at each other or sharing a heartfelt conversation. Characters stare off into the distance, looking at the vast waters ahead. It is also, as White underlines, a visual component that repeats in the episodes. It’ll be at least a little bit different to see The White Lotus characters move away from sandy, sunbathing surroundings.

Francesca Orsi, a top executive at HBO who is in charge of the drama slate, said that The White Lotus season 4 could end up in Europe. Previous seasons were set in Hawaii and Italy. The latest took place in Thailand.
Our Take On The Potential Change For The White Lotus
It’s A Change Of Pace
The White Lotus is the show’s highest-rated outing. It is also happening at a time when some viewers and critics have been complaining about the similarities between seasons in terms of characters and themes. A shift in the location, a shift in the characters’ surroundings, and how they are able to spend their downtime will at least go some way to make the next iteration of the series feel refreshed. But it’s cautioned that White, who writes and directs every episode of the show, is planning for a little downtime of his own, so it may be a little while before season 4 gets underway.
