This Season Is Going To Be Awesome

A year after season 1 ended, Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2 has officially wrapped. Based on Rick Riordan’s books, the first season followed The Lightning Thief. Season 2 is poised to adapt its sequel, The Sea of Monsters. The shows stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. All three young actors are expected to return for Percy Jackson season 2, and they will be joined by newcomers Rosemarie DeWitt (C.C.) and Daniel Diemer (Tyson).

In his latest post on BlueSky, author Rick Riordan announced that principal photography is already done. Check out his announcement below, which includes insight into the post-production schedule:

Riordan congratulated the cast and crew, but he also emphasized that the production is not quite over. There will still be many more months” of editing, VFX work, and other important phases. Still, Riordan stated that “this season is going to be awesome!” and had nothing but excitement about the announcement.

What Riordan’s Announcement Means For Percy Jackson Season 2

The Next Season Is Coming This Year

The next season should be coming surprisingly quickly. Season 1 was greenlit in January 2022, filming began on June 2, 2022, and it ended on February 2, 2023. The release date, however, did not come until December 19, 2023, indicating a long post-production cycle. If Percy Jackson season 2 keeps to a similar schedule, it is likely that the new episodes will not be released until December 2025, much like the original. Season 2 was renewed in February 2024, so there has only been about a year to write, cast, and film for season 2.

Writing for season 2 began on March 2023, before the show was renewed.

Because Disney has not yet greenlit season 3, it is likely that it will also have a two-year production cycle. Writing can take place at the same time as filming, but it would not be the only major delay. The editing and visual development process is another significant and lengthy process. This is an extremely CGI-heavy show, which means that VFX artists will spend the next few months working diligently to create believable battles. Water is especially difficult to animate, so a Sea of Monsters adaptation will, understandably, take ample time.

Our Take On Percy Jackson Season 2’s Production Announcement

It Is Already An Amazing Step

The characters from Percy Jackson & the Olympians are looking at something off-screen.

While this is certainly not a release announcement, a production wrap is always an exciting step. Post-production can now begin in earnest, as editors, VFX artists, and Riordan work together to match the vision of showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. With one major phase finished, Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 2 is now tangibly closer to meeting its anticipated release window. It may not be a trailer release, but it is the next best thing for Disney’s most-watched show in 2024.
