Two Full House Stars Agree That One Episode “Takes The Cake” As The Show’s All-Time Worst

Full House cast members Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber are in agreement over the episode they view as the show’s worst. First airing in September 1987, Full House became one of the most successful American sitcoms, spanning eight seasons and 192 episodes, before concluding in May 1995. The cast of Full House included Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, and John Stamos, along with Sweetin and Barber as Stephanie Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler respectively. Both reprised their roles for the successful Netflix spinoff Fuller House, which released five seasons from 2016-2020.

Per Entertainment Weekly, during an episode of their podcast How Rude, Tanneritos, the two stars discussed the worst-ever episode of Full House, and reached the consensus that the season one episode “Sea Cruise” stands alone as the show’s weakest. They discussed other potential options, such as Michelle’s dream sequence in season 3’s “Bye, Bye Birdie,” but determined that the audience would be in no doubt that it was “Sea Cruise.” Barber confirmed she didn’t think there had been a “worse episode since Sea Cruise” while Sweetin agreed, “Sea Cruise takes the cake.” Check out the exchange below:

Sweetin: I think the audience already knows the answer to the worst.

Barber: Oh, yeah. Should we start with the worst?

Sweetin: On the count of three. One, two, three.

Both: Sea Cruise!

Barber: Easily the worst episode. I don’t think there’s been a worse episode since Sea Cruise. Like I think Sea Cruise takes the cake for all seasons.

Sweetin: Sea Cruise takes the cake. Although, whatever that weird Michelle dream sequence was was also creepy.

Barber: That was very creepy.

Sweetin: And the Howie stuff was also pretty low. But, again, not as bad as Sea Cruise.

Barber: Still not as bad as Sea Cruise, yeah. I keep waiting to assign, to crown, a new worst episode, but for me, it’s Sea Cruise. It’s still there.

What This Means For Full House

The Infamous Episode Has Become Iconically Bad Over The Years

“Sea Cruise” is widely considered to be the worst episode of the show, and after several decades, this still remains the case. Sweetin and Barber’s comments cement this, as they worked on 192 episodes of Full House, as well as 75 episodes of Fuller House, and thus are perfectly suited to ruling on what the show’s worst episode is. Over time, it seems like the episode has gone on to be viewed as almost iconically bad, and remains disliked in ways that few other episodes of Full House have gotten close to.

Fuller House: Why Jesse Walks Stephanie Down the Aisle (Not Danny)

Fuller House’s series finale ended with the girls’ triple wedding — but why did Uncle Jesse walk Stephanie down the aisle and not her father, Danny?

The episode sees a fishing trip, scheduled by Danny as a male bonding session, turn into a party cruise when three women come on board. However, Danny has mixed feelings about dating again so soon after the death of his wife, and this presents one of the biggest problems with the episode. Being one of the earliest episodes of the show’s run, there is a good chance Full House was still trying to find its feet as a show, and tried to do something a little more off-beat with “Sea Cruise,” which resulted in a messy and unamusing episode.

The Episode Feels Tonally Disjointed From The Show

The Tanner family in Full House

“Sea Cruise” is rightly regarded as the worst episode of Full House, and it is a strange installment that feels tonally disjointed from the rest of the series. The shift in focus removes the family dynamic that made the show work so well, as well as the awkward jokes and the fact it feels too soon for Danny to start dating again after his wife’s death. The episode is wide of the mark in many ways, but fortunately, the show learned a lot from this, and Full House continued for another seven seasons, with largely strong consistency.
