Tyler Perry’s Netflix Series With 57% RT Audience Score Gets Season 2 Renewal

Tyler Perry is a massive media mogul, with many movies and television shows spread across multiple streaming services. The actor, writer, director, and producer is perhaps best known for playing Madea, a tough elderly woman who has appeared in several stage plays, a dozen movies, and numerous television series. This includes Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, which aired for eight seasons on TBS from 2006 to 2012. Shortly after, Perry formed a partnership to produce series for the Oprah Winfrey Network.

In recent years, however, Perry’s projects have been confined to streaming, most notably Netflix. From 2020 to 2024, he wrote and directed A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman’s Blues, Mea Culpa, and The Six Triple Eight – all for Netflix. Many of these movies were panned by critics, but were somewhat popular on the streaming service. In 2025, Perry has Madea’s Destination Wedding and several new shows premiering. In addition, one of his Netflix series will be back for a second season.

As announced by Netflix, Beauty in Black will be back for a second season and will be released in two parts, just like the first. Talking to Tudum, Perry teased what to expect from season 2 following Beauty in Black season 1’s ending:

We left fans on the edge of their seats at the end of Season 1, and we’re thrilled to continue Kimmie’s journey as she steps into her power as the newest member of the Bellarie family. Kimmie exemplifies the spirit of never underestimating the underdog, and I can’t wait for fans to continue to see her story unfold. What Beauty In Black Season 2’s Renewal Means For Netflix

Their Puzzling Renewals Continue

Beauty in Black only has three reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t even enough to qualify for a score, though the series has received largely negative reviews from critics. For instance, Joel Keller from Decider says, “Tyler Perry’s Beauty In Black is about as subtle as a slap in the face, which is something we’re surprised we didn’t see in the grim, abuse-filled first episode.” Andrew Lawrence of The Guardian also gave it a bad review, writing, “The wildly successful mogul’s first drama series for the streamer is a disaster with one-dimensional characters and haphazard plotting.”

Beauty in Black also has a middling 57% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes its season 2 renewal all the more mystifying. It’s especially puzzling shortly after Netflix canceled The Recruit so quickly after two seasons, despite its 80% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The Tyler Perry show does seem to be pulling in viewers, but it remains puzzling why Netflix would renew a bad show like Beauty in Black, but cancel The Recruit, an equally popular and much better-received series.
