A Scream 6 Easter egg may reveal that the theories of Gale Weathers impending death might just come true. The sequel, which is being helmed by Scream 2022 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, comes to theaters on March 10 and will follow a new Ghostface killer descending upon New York City. The only remaining survivor of the original 1996 film to appear will be Courteney Cox’s journalist and TV personality Gale Weathers, following the death of David Arquette’s Dewey Riley and the contract dispute that led to Neve Campbell backing out of appearing in the film as final girl Sidney Prescott.
This weekend, horror journalist Matt Donato attended a Scream fan experience in Santa Monica, which featured a walkthrough of a bodega like the one seen in the Scream 6 trailer.
The second photo in the gallery he shared from the official event reveals that Gale wrote a book about the events of Scream 2022 titled Requel: Terror Returns to Woodsboro. This is something she specifically promised not to do, in fear of inspiring a new rash of killings, which may reveal the reason Ghostface is especially targeting her in the new film and support theories that she won’t survive the end of the sequel.
Gale Weathers Evolves in the Scream Franchise, But Only So Much
This development, if it indeed comes to pass in the film, might seem like a betrayal of the character on the surface. However, there are many reasons that Gale Weathers may have elected to write that book. The most likely is that some competitor of hers was trying to swoop in and write it first.
While Gale’s arc across the six Scream films has seen her soften and open herself up to more human connections, her number one priority has always been herself. Although she takes tiny steps forward each time, most of the films open with the character continuing the dogged pursuit of career success at all costs. Whether she’s writing true crime books, anchoring a news program, or hosting a talk show, Gale can’t resist the draw of her name in lights.
However, that uncontrollable urge might just lead to her downfall. While Gale’s death in Scream 6 would upset longtime fans, writing that book could be the last straw for her character. However, if she does survive, she might be consumed with guilt over provoking a new killer into action, which could be an interesting thread to explore in a potential Scream 7.
