Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 2.
A Squid Game behind-the-scenes video reveals the expert responsible for Kang Dae-ho’s (Kang Ha-neul) exemplary Gonggi performance. Squid Game‘s Gonggi is one of the five mini-competitions that each team is required to complete during the six-legged pentathlon. Dae-ho is responsible for the Gonggi portion of the race and seamlessly completes all five rounds of the game during his first attempt, an impressive feat that helps his team win the overall competition.
During a Netflix behind-the-scenes video, Kang explains that even though he was becoming proficient at playing Gonggi, an expert was brought in. The Gonggi expert was “unbelievably good” and had unparalleled technique. The expert playing the game is what was filmed and used in Squid Game season 2, and it was only later edited to appear as if Dae-ho was the one playing Gonggi the entire time. Check out Kang’s comments below:
I was starting to get the hang of it, but the director invited an expert. He was unbelievably good, using both his hands to play throughout all five levels. We had that on camera and edited it like Dae-ho was playing.
What This Means For Squid Game
Dae-ho’s Gonggi Victory Is An Important Moment For His Character
While Dae-ho is unable to rise to the occasion during Squid Game season 2’s ending, the Gonggi game during the six-legged race is a triumphant moment for him in which he gets to shine. His skill helps save both himself and his teammates, and he does not let the pressure of the situation get to him. Kang’s acting brings the necessary charm and confidence to the scene while the real-life Gonggi expert and post-production editing make Dae-ho’s performance come to life.
