Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy teases Hugh Jackman’s upcoming reprisal of Wolverine, who will star alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in the 2024 movie. Deadpool 3 is set to be the first in the trilogy to take place in the MCU, and with Wolverine already confirmed to appear, there are rumors the film could be a huge crossover event, potentially featuring other characters from the Fox superhero franchises. Jackman will be appearing as Wolverine for the first time since 2017’s critically acclaimed Logan, having previously announced his retirement from the role.
In an interview with SYFY, Levy shares his excitement at being able to tell the story of “the ultimate Marvel icon and the ultimate Marvel iconoclast.” The director considers himself extremely lucky to be helming the Deadpool 3 MCU movie, and notes that the combination of characters is constantly generating new ideas during the script-writing process. Check out Levy’s full quote below:
“I’ll just say that to be developing and prepping this movie that has this iconic duo together in an entire movie for the first time — a pairing between Hugh and Ryan, Wolverine and Deadpool. [It’s] very much a pairing that the world has waited for for over a decade, [and] I’m the lucky son of a b**** who gets to tell a story about that pair. The potential is so rich and every day that we work on the screenplay, there are ideas that we didn’t anticipate that appear because you’re talking about the ultimate Marvel icon and the ultimate Marvel iconoclast.”
What We Know About Deadpool 3
Not much is currently known about the plot of Deadpool 3, as it’s being kept heavily under wraps, except that Deadpool will have to somehow venture from the Fox X-Men Universe to the MCU. There were fears that this transition would mean the end of its R-rating, a signature of the films and their humor. Marvel Studios have been quick to dispel those fears, however, just as a similar assurance was made for the upcoming reboot series Daredevil: Born Again. That show’s lead, Charlie Cox, even believes Deadpool and Daredevil could be compatible, which has naturally sparked speculation that his character will be involved in Deadpool 3.
How Important Is Wolverine For Deadpool 3?
There are theories suggesting that Loki‘s TVA could play a part in Deadpool 3, following a social media interaction between Reynolds and the Miss Minutes Twitter account. The TVA would feasibly allow for Wolverine to enter the MCU without affecting the heartfelt end to his character in Logan, which saw him sacrifice himself, solidifying one of the best character arcs of a Marvel character on-screen. Creators have been quick to specify that Wolverine’s Logan ending will not be affected following concerns that his resurfacing in Deadpool 3 would tarnish it. The TVA can be the perfect way to introduce a variant of Wolverine, in line with MCU’s current Multiverse Saga, that is independent of the one viewers saw in the existing X-Men films, while still allowing Jackman to star.
It’s currently unknown what role Wolverine will play in Deadpool 3, though Reynolds has had plans to utilize him for the third film since even before Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Levy in his interview notes he will be able to show “this iconic duo together in an entire movie for the first time,” which suggests Wolverine will have a major role to play, as opposed to more of a cameo. It’s unlikely that Jackman will keep the role beyond Deadpool 3, but it’s still a pleasant surprise for fans wishing to see his Wolverine one more time.
