Dave Bautista doesn’t think he would be a good fit to play Bane as part of Batman’s story in the DC Universe. The DCU (formerly known as the DCEU) is in for a massive change following Warner Bros. Discovery launching DC Studios in 2022. Meant to replace DC Films, DC Studios is being led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were appointed to the roles of co-CEOs. Under their management, they will be focusing on television, movies, animation, and video games that will help create a more cohesive DCU. The road map they are working on is meant to last for the next 8-10 years. This means the end of the ongoing DCEU that has been operating since 2013’s Man of Steel.
As decisions about the DCU are coming soon, questions remain about what Gunn’s new franchise will look like and who will be part of it. Bautista, who has been part of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has previously spoken about wanting to play the Batman foe Bane. However, the actor is having a change of heart, as seen in a new interview with Insider. Bautista discusses how he thinks that playing Bane “at this point in my career” is not something he could do justice. The actor says:
“I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”
Which GOTG Actors May Join James Gunn’s DCU
Gunn has previously stated how he is looking forward to working with actors from Guardians of the Galaxy in his future projects, including those that will come from DC. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not only mark the completion of a trilogy but probably the end for some of those actors within the MCU. Whether their Marvel Cinematic Universe characters get killed off or have a natural ending remains to be seen. For the time being, Gunn has not given any definitive names of the Guardians of the Galaxy actors he hopes to bring over to the DCU.
For The Suicide Squad, Gunn did cast Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone, and his brother Sean Gunn, who have all been in his Guardians of the Galaxy movies. What many are likely wondering is whether or not he will cast the main Guardians in DCU roles. Whether it be Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper remain to be seen. Even if Bautista doesn’t play Bane in a Batman project, that doesn’t necessarily prevent him from portraying a different DC player.
Given Gunn’s track record with working with some of the same actors again, it wouldn’t come as a shock if at least one or two Guardians of the Galaxy alums come sooner rather than later. There are a lot of expectations right now of the DCU, given the many creative changes behind the films over the last few years. With Gunn and Safran now in charge, time will tell what kind of DCU they will be creating across TV, film, and even video games. As the DCU gets properly kicked off under DC Studios’ purview, it will be intriguing to follow its development in the coming years.
