Between September 9 and December 16, a lot has changed in a matter of less than 100 days. There was a draught of hits at the box office and then Brahmastra arrived on 9th September and brought audiences back in theatres. The film took an excellent start of Rs 37 crores and then had a hefty weekend of Rs 122 crores, only to result in a lifetime of Rs 260 crores. Now the manner in which December 16 release Avatar: The Way of Water is currently performing at the box office, it could well be aiming for this kind of a lifetime in the long run.
To begin with, it enjoyed a bigger first day by a little margin of around 10% when it managed to collect Rs 41 crores. Post that, it had a very good Saturday too and now Sunday is the best of the lot, what with a huge Rs 46 crores* coming in. Of course, a single day of 50 crores would have been ultra fantabulous but then for that a film needs to be in the same zone as KGF: Chapter 2 [Hindi], which enjoyed this feat with aplomb. What the Hollywood sci-fi film has done isn’t less spectacular either as the total now stands at 128 crores*, which is just phenomenal.
Meanwhile, Drishyam 2 is enjoying a journey of its own, what with collections again going past the Rs 2 crores mark. The film brought in Rs 2.56 crores on Sunday, which is excellent if one considers the fact that this is fifth week running and also competition too is ultra huge in the form of Avatar: The Way of Water which is doing great guns. Still, for the Ajay Devgn-starrer to go and collect as much is nothing less than spectacular. Even till date, number of shows are going houseful and that’s what has pushed the overall total to Rs 221.35 crores already.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
