Big Hero 6 producer Roy Conli has revealed what it will take for a sequel to happen. Loosely based on the Marvel superhero of the same name, Disney’s 2014 animated adaptation proved a box office boon for the studio, bringing in over $657 million in worldwide box office. Not only would the movie go on to spawn two spinoff television shows, 2017’s Big Hero 6: The Series and 2022’s Baymax!, but it would also inspire a manga adaptation and multiple video games.
Ahead of Disneynature’s upcoming documentary movie Tiger, Screen Rant spoke with Conli and asked whether there were any plans for another big screen follow-up to his 2014 animated hit. While no plans for a Big Hero Six sequel exist, Conli revealed that he “always secretly urge[s]” original co-director Don Hall to return to the property. However, he suggested any such move would rely on Hall’s involvement, given he was responsible for the initial concept. Check out his comments below:
You know, we’re celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Big Hero 6 this year. A great movie for myself, Don Hall, and Chris Williams, who put that together. It’s interesting because it is really up to Don whether he wants to make a sequel to that. It was Don’s concept and idea. I always secretly urge him to do it, but we’ll see. He loves working on new property. So we’ll see what happens.
Could A Big Hero 6 Sequel Potentially Connect With The MCU?
Marvel’s Multiverse Could Open Up New Possibilities For The Disney Hit
Despite being heavily influenced by Pixar’s animation style and storytelling sensibilities, the Big Hero 6 original comics has a Japanese-based Marvel superhero team that differs from its movie counterpart. Throughout their original comic book appearances, Big Hero 6 would cross paths with several major Marvel characters including Charles Xavier, Elektra, Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus.
With Marvel Studios’ animated properties X-Men ’97 and What If..? seemingly taking place within the broader multiverse of the MCU, so too could a potential Big Hero 6 sequel.
When Walt Disney Animation Studios began to adapt the property for their 2014 animated movie, they would ultimately restructure the story and make significant departures from the character’s original backgrounds and designs. Moreover, the finished movie would also take place in its own world, separate from the larger Marvel universe. However, given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more recent embrace of alternate universes, it is possible that a Big Hero 6 sequel could potentially see the property return to its comic roots and re-establish its links with existing Marvel lore.

Stan Lee’s Big Hero 6 Cameo Explained
Disney’s animated movie Big Hero 6 features a cameo from Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, but why? Here’s how he’s connected to the superhero movie.
With Marvel Studios’ animated properties X-Men ’97 and What If..? seemingly taking place within the broader multiverse of the MCU, so too could a potential Big Hero 6 sequel. While it is unlikely that Disney’s animated Baymax would exist in the same world as characters like Captain America and Iron Man, it is entirely possible their own world could exist somewhere on a branched timeline on Loki’s World Tree. Yet, at this stage, it is unclear whether a sequel to Big Hero 6 will even happen, let alone if it could potentially establish connections back to its Marvel roots.
There Are Shows That Act As Big Hero 6 Sequels
Big Hero 6: The Series & Baymax!
While there has been no Big Hero 6 sequel in movie form, there have been sequels on television. In 2017, Big Hero 6: The Series premiered on Disney Channel and Disney XD as a sequel that takes place immediately after the movie’s story ended. This was not only a sequel for storyline purposes, but it also kept the continuity by bringing back all the voice actors except for Damon Wayans Jr. (Wasabi) and T.J. Miller (Fred Frederickson IV). The series lasted for three seasons and 56 episodes.
There was also another sequel that was more geared toward younger audiences based on Baymax. This series aired on Disney+ and was titled Baymax! The series followed Baymax as he worked as a nurse helper, traveling all around San Fransokyo. Each episode was short, checking in at 10 to 11 minutes each. Their storylines all connected in the big finale, where everyone that Baymax helped banded together to help save him. There were six episodes in the Big Hero 6 spinoff series.
In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Big Hero 6, the child genius Hiro Hamada works with his brother Tadashi’s inflatable robot, Baymax, to assemble a superhero team in the fictional city of San Fransokyo. The titular group of geeky heroes, composed of Honey Lemon, Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, and Fred, help Hiro and Baymax take down a masked villain powered by nanobots.
