The new Batman movie in the DC Universe has sparked questions and divisive reactions. After a long wait, DC Studios officially revealed its first batch of plans for the new DCU that James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating. Hired in 2022, Gunn and Safran have been busy putting together a new creative map for the DCU that will be worth 8-10 years of storytelling. While the old DCEU era is slowly reaching its end, a new one will begin in 2025. Safran and Gunn’s mission is to set up a cohesive DCU that brings TV shows, movies, animated projects, and video games together.
One of the big takeaways from the major DCU movie and TV slate was the reveal that a new Batman film is in the works, titled The Brave and the Bold. It won’t star Robert Pattinson or Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight, but instead will be led by a different actor. This take on Bruce Wayne will discover the existence of his biological son, Damian Wayne, drawing from Grant Morrison’s Batman comic run. However, the reboot’s story has received mixed reactions. While some are in favor of this direction, others are questioning if this is the right choice for the next cinematic Batman. Check out several tweets below:
Why Fans Are Torn On The Brave & The Bold
Batman is one of the most famous fictional superheroes of this generation and has been depicted numerous times outside of comics. With the Caped Crusader having the big following that he has, everyone has their own idea and preference of what kind of Batman they want to see portrayed. That is why Batman properties always gain huge reactions whenever someone is cast as the hero or any of the other iconic characters surrounding him. Something that is also highly discussed usually is the time period in Batman’s life that a creative chooses to focus on.
In the case of The Brave and the Bold, some are open to the idea of having a new Batman franchise explore a refreshing aspect of his life. Even though other Batman films have seen Bruce with at least one Robin by his side, they have never gotten to Damian. Previous live-action Batman incarnations have also not gone full-out exploring the Batfamily dynamic, including Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, Batwoman, and many more. However, there is a side that thinks a new Batman movie starting in the middle of his career leaves out some of the key milestones in Bruce’s life.
Damian has also been a divisive character in the DC community, with there being a split reception to this Robin. That will obviously factor in how fans respond to the Brave and the Bold announcement, even though no casting has been made. The DCU is only just getting started, meaning it’s premature to look at the new Batman reboot and have any judgment when not a single frame has been shot. Once The Brave and the Bold movie gets closer to happening, it will be intriguing to see how the DCU project tackles this iteration of Batman and Robin.
