A post asking film audiences to choose which of four beloved Disney animated movies to let go has sparked debates on Twitter, with a number of fans specifically sharing passionate defenses for Mulan and Ratatouille. The Walt Disney Company is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary across 2023, honoring its long legacy of films including its classic groundbreaking animated features, Pixar’s emotional stories, and more modern hits.
In a post originally made by Twitter user @AQUAKITTY, viewers who grew up with Disney were asked to select which of four films they would gladly give up out of four films: Monsters Inc.; Ratatouille; The Princess and the Frog; and Mulan. Out of the choices, Ratatouille and Mulan garnered a number of passionate defenses against being let go, leading to each film’s title trending for some time on the social media site. Disney’s Seven Eras of Animation Explained
The Walt Disney Company’s animated filmography can be divided into distinct subcategories and eras. Beginning with the “Golden Age” between 1937 and 1942, the company established itself and proved feature length animated films could be successful through films including Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Bambi, and Fantasia. This was followed by the Wartime Era (1943-9), during which anthology films took priority to account for production difficulties of the time, before the Silver Age (1950-67) brought a return to feature-length animation with films including Cinderella, Peter Pan, and The Jungle Book.
While the following Bronze Age from 1970-80 allowed for experimentation and a break from classic tales, resulting in films including The Aristocats and The Fox and the Hound, the Disney Renaissance period from 1989 to 1999 marked a return to its classic adaptation roots, resulting in films including Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. Disney’s post-Renaissance era (1999-2009) saw a transition away from hand-drawn 2D animation styles, with films including The Emperor’s New Groove and Lilo & Stitch showing the gradual change.
This would ultimately culminate in the current Revival era that began with The Princess and the Frog in 2009, and led to such hits as Tangled, Moana, Frozen, and Encanto. While fans may be divided between Disney’s beloved animated features, the debates show the effect the company has had across generations. Ratatouille and Mulan garnered incredible support here, but it is evident that works from each of Disney‘s eras hold a special place in audiences hearts.
