Hayley Atwell shares her blunt thoughts about Captain Carter’s role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Atwell first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Agent Peggy Carter in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger, and has had cameos in several other Marvel films since. Beloved by fans, Peggy’s massive popularity allowed her to have a television series of her own, Agent Carter, which ran from 2015 to 2016, comprising 18 total episodes. It wasn’t until 2021 that the Disney+ animated Marvel series What If…? introduced Atwell’s character in a new role, turning Agent Peggy Carter into Captain Carter, a British counterpart to Captain America, donning a Union Jack-clad suit and shield. A live-action Captain Carter made her first appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as one of the founding members of the Illuminati in an alternate universe.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Atwell opened up about playing Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, saying that it isn’t the journey she sees Peggy taking. Atwell says that it’s remarkable to think that one character played 10 years ago still has an impact on people today, and that while Captain Carter didn’t survive Wanda’s attack on the Illuminati, there is still a potential for Peggy to return to the MCU. “It was definitely not, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy. I would definitely like her to have more to do. It’s so funny, because, you know, I did that 10 years ago, and I love her because I love the people, and you never know [if there could be more].”
How Doctor Strange 2’s Captain Carter Was Different From Rest Of MCU
A well-established character in the MCU, Peggy’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness appearance was a stark contrast to the figure fans have come to know and love. Unlike Agent Carter, Captain Carter was a much harsher character, with more of a sense of by-the-book duty. Whereas Agent Carter bent and broke rules for the greater good, Captain Carter was much less flexible and much less kind. Ultimately, viewers didn’t get to see much of the alternate universe’s Captain Carter, as she was bisected with her own shield during Wanda’s slaughter of the Illuminati.
With Captain Carter only ever appearing in alternate universes – both in What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there are still many ways to bring Peggy back into the MCU. Whether or not Atwell wants to pursue Captain Carter over Agent Carter, however, is another story. Atwell admits that she wants to see Peggy “have more to do,” but that Captain Carter isn’t the route forward she envisions for the character. However, in May, there were rumors circulating about a potential live-action Captain Carter television series, possibly airing on Disney+.
Peggy Deserves An MCU Return
Regardless of how Peggy returns to the MCU, as Captain Carter or otherwise, she is undoubtedly a major player in the franchise after so many appearances. Since her first appearance in 2011, Peggy has proven herself to be an unflinchingly strong, smart, and capable hero who always stands her ground and doesn’t let herself be talked down to. Though the rumors of a Captain Carter series are still only that, Atwell’s performance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness prove that there is still a need for Peggy Carter in the MCU whether she holds a shield or not.
