Gremlins 3 Gets A Reassuring Update Despite Being In Development For 8 Years

Gremlins 3 has received a reassuring update despite being in development for eight years, when the original writer was attached to the sequel. In 2017, it was announced a potential Gremlins 3 script had been written by Chris Columbus, who penned the screenplay for the 1984 original. Since then, the movie hasn’t gotten any concrete updates, aside from confirmation by Colombus in 2020 that creature puppets would be used instead of CGI. The latest release from the franchise is Max’s animated Gremlins series, aimed at a younger audience and serving as a prequel to the original.

Now, in a report from Deadline about Warner Bros.’ plans for future movie prospects, it was confirmed Gremlins 3 is still in development, with Columbus serving as the writer. This is confirmation that, despite the project not getting any concrete news for five years – and being in development for eight – the sequel is still being worked on. The news arrived alongside confirmation of a fifth Matrix movie, and a Goonies sequel. However, there is no confirmation as to how far along the new Gremlins movie’s development is.

What Gremlins 3’s Latest Update Means For The Movie

The Sequel Is Still In Development

Talks of Gremlins 3 happening began in 2013, when it was reported Seth Grahame-Smith (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and David Katzenberg (It) were going to serve as producers. In 2015, Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in the first two movies, confirmed the script was being worked on by Columbus in 2016, with the writer confirming the film was being made in 2017. He explained his script would explore whether Gizmo should be killed because he’s been the only source of the mogwai that have turned into gremlins after being fed after midnight.

Since Gremlins 3 might actually happen, the long-awaited sequel to the ’80s classic can finally answer the biggest question about Gizmo the mogwai.

Since then, aside from confirmation the film won’t feature any CGI, there have been no concrete updates about the movie. Now, however, it seems Warner Bros. is prioritizing the sequel as a way to revive the franchise, alongside plenty of other familiar series in their catalog. While Gremlins 3‘s delay has kept all details about the movie under wraps, it’s possible the animated series on Max acted as a test to gauge current interest in the franchise. While the latest update didn’t confirm how far along in development Gremlins 3 really is, Columbus wrote the script back in 2017, indicating the story has already been figured out. Since it remains in the development stages, it could be quite some time until the movie actually ends up on the big screen. For now, it seems like there won’t be any more concrete news about its production timeline until more is actually revealed about its current progress.

The next entry in the franchise will be Gremlins season 2 part 2, which doesn’t have a release date as of writing.
