Tom Cruise comments on the record breaking box office weekend aided by Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. In this year’s equivalent of the Barbenheimer battle, the two movies duked it out this weekend when they both released on May 23. Not only were they releasing on the same day, but the films were both coming out over Memorial Day weekend, an extended holiday weekend that can often lead to big box office gains. So far, both the family movie an animated franchise film have had huge success.

Now, Cruise has commented on the great Stitchpossible phenomenon. Cruise commented in the form of a social media post wherein he screenshotted a version of his comments in text.

The actor opened his statement by saying “this weekend was one for the history books!” He sent his biggest congratulations to the filmmakers, cast, and crew members who worked on both films. He went on to thank “audiences everywhere” for making this possible, as well as his team at Paramount Pictures and Skydance.

What This Means For Stitchpossible

Records Were Broken This Weekend

Cruise is accurate when he says that this was “one for the history books.” Between the two movies, several box office records were broken. Lilo & Stitch set the record for having the best domestic opening box office over Memorial Day weekend of all time. It grossed $183 million over the four-day period to do so, beating out the record set by a Cruise movie, Top Gun: Maverick. This total ranked above even generous predictions for the film, which guessed it might pull $120 million over its opening. It also beat out the entire gross of the animated original.

Though it was annihilated by Lilo & Stitch in the box office battle, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning also did well at the box office during its opening weekend. The movie opened to $204 million worldwide, marking one of the better openings for the Mission: Impossible franchise. This sets it on a good track to outpace its predecessor, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. As such, it is fair to say that this past weekend at the box office was incredibly impressive, justifying Cruise’s excitement.

More to come…
