Avatar: The Way of Water star Sam Worthington recently revealed that director James Cameron wrote an entire Avatar script that will never be produced. 13 years after Avatar took the world by storm and became the highest-grossing film of all time, Cameron returns to continue the science-fiction fantasy franchise with his epic sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. Set 10 years after the Na’vi took down the Resources Development Administration, the upcoming film follows Jake Sully (Worthington) and his Na’vi partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they fight to protect their family and people.

In a recent interview with Collider, Worthington revealed that Cameron wrote an entire Avatar script that will never be produced. To fill in the decade gap between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, Worthington, and Saldaña were given a completed Avatar screenplay that bridges the original movie with its predecessor. Worthington explained, “Jim [Cameron] gave us a script of 1.5 that he wrote that shows the time between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, and he wrote a full script.” The actor praised the story, adding, “I said, ‘When do we shoot this one? Because this is amazing.’ He goes, ‘No, no, that’s just something I wrote over the past year to give you his backstory.'” Worthington thought he lost the script, but Saldaña revealed that she kept it after he let her borrow it and had no intention of returning it.

Although no details about the story of the Avatar 1.5 screenplay were divulged by either Worthington or Saldaña, the bulk of the backstory will probably be delivered organically through Avatar: The Way of Water’s narrative. The upcoming film’s over three-hour runtime will take the time to address the events leading up to Jake’s ocean adventure. However, fans can only speculate as to what the ten-year gap entailed.

Cameron’s Avatar 1.5 script likely covers what immediately happened following the Na’vi’s rebellion, depicting how the Na’vi rebuilt their society in the wake of the war. But more importantly, detailing Jake and Neytiri’s relationship as their family grew with three biological children and why they chose to adopt Kiri, Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious teenage character But also Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion), a human born on the Hell’s Gate base who Jake and Neytiri rescued.

It is unclear if the Avatar 1.5 screenplay will ever be released as Worthington and Saldaña did not indicate their intention to deliver the document to the public. The actors are probably under NDAs with Cameron and the producing studio, which precludes them from discussing the contents of the screenplay. However, the director may choose to release the script in the future, similar to Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly’s unmade screenplay for Star Wars: Episode IX, or as a separate project in a different medium such as a graphic novel or animated television series in the same vein as The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. When Avatar: The Way of Water premieres in a little more than a week, audiences will likely get hints to what the Avatar 1.5 script entails.
