New co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn reveals which Batman villain won’t be appearing in the DCU anytime soon. It was announced that DCU, would be headed by Gunn and Peter Safran after previously making The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Following his last MCU project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2023, Gunn’s future will be solely focused on building up the next 10 years of DCU.
Gunn answered a fan’s question on Twitter and revealed which Batman villain he can’t promise will be used in the future of the DCU. While there are legitimate Batman villains waiting to be introduced, some are minor characters who serve more as jokes than fully-fledged villains. One such character is Condiment King, who was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series. Gunn had a blunt, but funny, response when asked about seeing the character in the DCU. What Batman Villains Should Join The DCU
Batman has one of the best Rogues Gallery in the entirety of comic book characters, rivaled only by Marvel’s Spider-Man. Due to having such a vast list of antagonists, Batman’s yet to face many in live-action. There are truly some extraordinary Batman villains that have yet to be adapted on the big screen, and Gunn should focus on bringing them to the forefront of the DCU in the next Batman movie.
Some of the most requested villains are The Court Of Owls and Mr. Freeze for The Batman 2. As it currently stands, Robert Pattinson’s version of the character lives in a separate universe from the DCU, but that could change with Gunn overseeing the entire DCU franchise. With Affleck’s possible Batman return unclear and Keaton’s future up in the air after the cancelation of Batgirl, Pattinson could be brought into DCU. Within the grounded world of The Batman, The Court Of Owls over Mr. Freeze may make more sense as they could match that tone. The Court brings a feeling of uneasiness, mystery, and corruption that would fit perfectly in Matt Reeves’ universe.
Some other Batman villains that have already appeared in prior projects also deserve to be brought back to join the DCU. The one villain that should return to the screen is Poison Ivy. The scientist/villain Poison Ivy’s popularity has grown this last decade, with her relationship with Harley Quinn playing a major role in Ivy’s change of status. Uma Thurman portrayed the character in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin, but that version was far from ideal. Following Ivy and Harley’s very public relationship in the adult-animated series Harley Quinn, fans have been claiming for Margot Robbie’s Harley to meet Ivy in the DCU. Gunns ties to Harley, through The Suicide Squad, and the animated series in which he appeared as himself, should bode well for the pair’s future in the DCU. Batman will have his plate full with whatever villain he faces next in the DCU.
